Never thought I'd have to ask this--I say Premium Fuel, my wife agrees, my Father says Regular Unleaded.

Which one and why? Is there consideration to the fact the previous owner let us know he always used Regular?

The beginnings are always so humble when learning about a new car...thanks for the understanding.

With the exception of high performance motors. I wouldn't put regular into an L82 although, as jclit said, if it doesn't ping you should be okay.
 
Hmmmmm, this brings up an interesting question. In my previous vettes (93 & 02) I always ran super, or what ever was the highest octane, because that's what they said to run. I have always run higher octane fuel in the 62, but do I need it? It's got the 327c.i. 300hp. engine in it. Hmmmmmmm...
 
You could try a tank of half-premium half mid-grade, then a whole tank of midgrade, then half mid-grade and half regular, then a whole tank of regular, just stop at the first sign of pinging. I tried that with my '72 last summer because I was driving it alot, I didn't get very far....nothing short of 94 octane works for me.

Absolutely!

From 72 on the base compression ratio for carbureted cars was 8.5 to 1 which is usually fine for regular gas. The performance motors typically had about 9.0 to 1 which usually requires a bit better gas.
 
In fact, neither is correct.

The proper grade of fuel to use is the one which allows the engine to operate detonation-free under most conditions.

With a 76 that is stock or near stock with its cooling on good condition, my guess is, at altitudes from sea level up to about 3000 ft, that's going to be about 89-octane.
 
The "Fuel" section in your Owner's Manual will tell you what is recommended - use that as a starting point. :)
