gasket sealer vs maker?

Whats the difference between gasket sealant and a gasket maker compound? I need to replace the cork gaskets on my valve covers and picked up a tube of Permatex gasket maker (black color), and the guys at the parts store told me that it's the same as the sealer, but I have my doubts.

The black gasket maker is more of a high temperature gasket sealant, or "maker", than the blue RTV sealant.
