My 75 has a strong gassy smell when I run it it's a holley, timing seems to be right on (12) And there is some detonation wide open, also trys to run on when shut down don't think it's bad gas any tips on things to check Been driving injection too long! I guess I need to go back Grassroots

there's a hose that runs from your intake(carb) ,to a canister inside the drivers side fender, if the can is rotted ot the hose bad it will do all you say. it's there to capture the gas fumes from your carb.mike

I know the bottle

I know where that bottle is. I guess A emission diagram would help I also have an aftermarket intake I guess that will throw a wrench in the works

Could it be the fuel pump? I dunno much about this stuff, so it's just a thought.

Hello, the detonation and engine run-on have me suspect there are other problems not fuel related. have you set the timing with the dist at full advance?
also what is the idle speed in neutral? the manifold shouldn't be an issue. unless there is a vacuum leak.

hope this helps

I had an engine that did that, set the timing correctly it would run on and pinged I finally set it by ear(took timing out till it stopped pinging) and later found out that the outside hub on my balancer had shifted causing the timing mark to be 8-10 degrees advanced.

Idles good

The idles good the engine was rebuild not to long ago seemed like a quailty rebuild would checking timing at full advance let me know if balancer has slipped, any tell tale signs I can check

JOE, for the timing, back off the distributor slightly .then take it for a drive. keep doing it till the pinging stops. then advance it till it just starts again. once you know the good and the bad settings you will know about where to set the dist.
to check the dampner, i would find #1 position on the distributor then see how far off the marks are on the dampner.

giving it my best shot

Robin

you need to determine number one TDC exactly. to do this you will need a piston stop and a degree wheel.
I determined mine had slipped when I pulled the heads to put bigger springs on for the roller cam. It is not uncommon for a balancer to slip. It maybe easier to put a quality street balancer from Summit or Jegs on to be sure then to check your old one:L
Off to work I go
