I understand they basically perform the same function but each has a specific difference. What exactly are the benefits and detractors for each and how would they affect hp?

Hello there, I havent spoke to you in a long while, hope everthing's peachey king in your neck of the wood's. ;)
the gear drive is noisey, but keep's the timing right on the money, no play at all, also it's rumored that it takes away some horse power because of the friction of the 2 gear's inter linked with one another I suppose.
If you have knock sensor's it may and may not set them off is another rumor flowing around, for some it might, for other's it wont.
I do plan on putting one on my car someday because...........I like the loud noise and that's it. :L
Double roller chain is probebly the best way to go, it has the strength to last and not snap under heavy load's, and will not stretch as easily as the single roller chain which mean's it'll last for a very long time, and causes no friction like it's gear drive cousin is supposed to make, so you wont loose any horse power.
There will be a little play but not much to really matter for what you plan on useing your car for.
Top fuel people need thery're timing to be exact, so that's why they go with the gear drive set up.
I'm sure if I missed something, someone will chime in to fix my mistakes here.
See yah! :w

Thank you Punch,

The question was asked by a friend with a 1976 Camaro that he uses as a Drag Strip bracket racer. He wants gear drive and he stated the same reason: because its loud and sounds cool. :D

I also thought that anyone performing a search for these topics could find info about them in this thread that asked specifically about them.

We took the engine out of my 78 to replace the heads and a piston and clean the engine bay up. We also changed to a double roller chain. My original timing chain could be pushed sideways about/over a half inch. That seemed like a lot of play, to me.
