Hello!

I would like to buy a glass roof panel for my 96CE. The few used ones I have looked at and looked at some on cars, have fine spider cracks. Does anyone know why this would happen and do they all crack eventually?
Thanks, Gloria :w

They are not made of glass, they are acrylic and tend to get spider cracks which don't actually go thru. Most is from heat and age but beware because some do have actual cracks in them but usually you can tell the difference apart from the fine spider cracks. They are more define and tend to be near the edges on the one's i've seen.

Hey,

Thanks for that info. I like the look of the top but just didn't like the cracks. I'll be looking much closer and if worse comes to worse I'll consider a new one. (I'm just trying to conserve my funds) Thanks again. G;worship

How much would a new one hit you for?

Edmond,

I can't remember exactly but I think it was around 500.00 - 600.00. It's one of those extra luxuries I can really live without. I only got to to put 300 miles on it in 8 months. (5 of those winter/snow) Weather permits in future I'll get 500 miles this year! Do you have this option on your car? Copper or Blue?
Thanks for asking, G.

i have a '96 collector edition... i have both tops. The clear is nice, and it could be better for you because of location, but here in Florida, the painted top stays on a good 10 months out of the year. The glass top makes the car REALLY hot when it sits in the sun, even if it isn't for that long. If i personally could only have one or the other, the painted top would definitely be my choice.

Not that MA gets as hot as FL (this last summer I'm not sure) but I agree on the solid top. Mine came with the spidered tinted top and one of the first things I bought was the solid top. If I want to let the sun in, I will remove the top.

Seems that all glass tops crack sooner or later. Guess it depends on how much they get used. Word is that autocrossing with the glass roof is bad. The stress can really crack it.

I have a glass top that hasn't been on in a couple of years. Normally, I install it for winter but since putting the stripe on the ol 92, I like it better with the solid - striped - roof. So, I'm trying to sell my glass roof. Seems that spring/summer is a bad time to try and sell one though.

There were a couple of glass roofs listed in the classified here. Mine was one but I think the ad expired.

Just a suggestion, in the interim......

When detailing your car, use a furniture polish such as pledge. It really does a good job on the acrylic surface and provides for a really improved appearance. It gives the panel a highly polished appearance, hiding the "spider cracks" and makes the decision to spend $$ not as urgent.

Ok, all you convinced me. I'll pass on the top and keep the original top. You're right, I drive with it off most of the time. I was just going along with someones suggestion anyway. I guess I just needed to hear (read) it.

Thanks to you all! G. :BOW
