glass top question?

anybody know if the glass panel in a top can be replaced with oem glass, instead of acrylic. ecklers and zip only offer acrylic. anybody know of someone that can repair a one inch crack in the glass? thanks for your help.

I just replaced the blue tinted top on my 96, due to two small cracks. I do not beleive cracks can be properly repaired - it is best to just replace the top. I believe the original top was acrylic. I got mine from Melrose Tops here in Illinois - they are licensed by GM to make replacement tops. Excellent quality, and they use all GM hardware. Their website is www.melroset-tops.com. The original tops were a coated acrylic, not glass. Glass tops would be very heavy.

so does that mean that eckler's acrylic top would be the same as and oem top?

You will need to ask Ecklers. You can get an oem top from your local GM dealer for $1200 - $1500. I believe that oem GM tops have a DOT approved label on them. The tops that came with the car originally also were engraved with the VIN number of the car.

As of last week the OEM tops were on back order, with no known delivery date. If you decide to obtain the top from a source other than a GM dealer (like I did), be sure the top is constructed with the proper acrylic material and GM trim. The Melrose tops website is a good source for what to look for and ask about before you buy.

I bought my glass top from Thompson Astro Tops. The shipping was $45. They're at:

I've been very happy with it. They use GM hardware for everything but the glass itself. And you can send them your cracked top as an exchange to reduce the price (basically, they're going to reglass it and sell it to someone else)
