Got the car home late this past week....here is a shot on the trailer before getting her down. I had the car at a shop I use, and they pulled the engine, transmission for me (figured was a bit more than I wanted to tackle in the garage by myself), they charged me $400 to pull it out and then sat the engine on a engine stand that they loaned me until I am ready for the engine to go back in. Took the motor to Ricks Speed Shop in Amherst, Ohio and he is going to re-do it for me. Motor is a 350 cu in out of an early 70's Camaro. Mild street cam, new pistons and completely refurbished. We discussed changing the motor to a 383 stroker, the adder for that over the rebuild was only $600, seemed like a good deal....anyone have comments on the plus and minus of the difference other than the extra $$$?

Looks very nice, congratulations! ... what else are you planning to do besides the engine rebuild? I haven't had a 383, but in the general discussions I've read, it's a good thing! Gobs of low-end torque. Just out of curiousity, what will the rebuild (without stroking) cost?

Even GM is selling 383's: http://tinyurl.com/cwm5p
425 hp, 460 ft lbs torque.
They also have a truck version with a 5k rpm limit for about a grand less.

the rebuild will cost about $2.3k, but then I am also getting the Edelbrock valve covers and intake manifold cleaned up to new condition, new double pumper carb, new Edelbrock alum water pump, new HEI.....that stuff is pushing it up further.....when all is done.....stroker is about $3.6k with everything above....

Let The Fun Begin!

Congratulation! On purchasing your solid axel. I am looking forward to following the progress on your car.

Everyone here has suggested that while I am at it...I would do myself a favor to rewire the car while I am at it....I look at the wiring and shivers run up my spine....turning a wrench here and there...OK, but the wiring, wow, I know nothing about wiring never miind how to read a schematic....so, does anyone else have that phobia and how did you get past it to turn out a great project?

firstgear:

Research (good library) and documentation (digital photos and written) is very important. Inspect and evaluate everything prior to disassembly. I rebuilt my wire harness on the 65 and the 61 harnesses was in perfect condition. I do need to secure a couple of original tail light connectors for the 61. I have set up a data base with control numbers that list, bag #, part #, condition, color & sheen or plating type, vendor to purchase or service parts, cost and I can even insert a picture, but there is not a lot to do here in Western NY during those cold winter days.

Rather than always wondering about possible problems, I decided to completely rewire with new harnesses front to rear.

Piece of cake. I used Lectric Limited's complete car package and had only two minor problems to deal with....nothing really. They are pre-wrapped just like the originals and properly colour-coded. The complete kit even comes with a large laminated schematic so that there were few problems in getting things working.

If your wiring is suspect, I highly recommend it.

Chapter 7.

thanks....I liked your Chapter 7...that seems to help! Gives me the idea that this isn't just one big mess of wires, but rather smaller assemblies to deal with.....much easier to eat the elephant one bite at a time, rather than trying to swallow the whole thing in one gulp!

thanks!

Did you buy the standard kit or the deluxe kit? Is it worth the extra money?

Just starting......pictures always look good....the motor area is really sad....had a 350 mid 70's Camaro motor and a T10 4 speed....paint is sad up close...nice at 15 feet (notice not a 10 footer)......chrome all needs to be redone.....interior not great...but not totaled.....had both tops....but the soft top needs to be redone....and the hard top needs to be redone....like I said, the car looks great in pictures....but it needs and needs.....there ya go!!!!

It is nice to start with an all together car instead of boxes of parts. Good luck and enjoy the project.

If your going to get serious about the wiring then I would get a "don Olson" wiring diagrahm. It will be color coded as will the harness that you buy so the schematic will compliment the wiring. This will be the best investment that you can make and a great
reference tool for your shop as from time to time if you keep the car, you will be chasing electrons around those wires. Not expensive and a good thing to have. He's a forum member.
