Hagerty Insurance terms prevent me from racing at a track

I received my renewal from Hagerty, and they have this addendum which basically voids the policy coverage if you take the Vette to the track.

What we will not pay for:

Personal liability
Medical payments coverage
Uninsured motorist coverage
coverage for damage to your covered vehicle

"no coverage is provided while the collector vehicle is:
- involved in any organized, or spontaneous racing activities;
- Used at a racing facility or facility/roadway temporarily designated for
speed, time, racing or performance driving events; or
- used for other activities which may cause damage or injury such as force
hydraulic bouncing competitions; pulling against another vehicle; and
stereo thumping competitions.

What we will pay for

We will pay for losses that occur while the collector vehicle is

+ on display in a race facility's paddock (NM defines paddock as "the area
at the race course where racing vehicles are parked. It does not i
include any pit area, or the track/course or its entrance or exit
lanes." ] area and is not being prepared for race;
+ on display in a facility or show display area and is not involved in any
competitive or exhibition activity described above
+ being trailered from one location to another
+ being used by you to attend an event as an spectator
+ being operated for purposes of display in any pre or post-event parade
laps; or
+ involved in an organized event on open, public roads while operated
within legal speed.

So with this coverage, I only get to drive my Vette nornally, but if I get involved in any stop-light challenge, and something goes wrong, then I will be left-out in-the-cold. :ohnoes

Do any of you guys have a similar coverage with Hagerty?

I am not surprised. I am not aware of any insurence company that will cover a race event.

Makes perfect sence to me.I think you'll be hard pressed to find any National insurance company that will cover racing .

So,

Does that means that none of you can take a 1/4 mile trip with your cars and be covered (with the insurance you currently have)?

I have always assumed that my drag strip passes were done at my own risk.

It may seem odd for me to be asking these seemingly naive questions, but my policy changed for the up-coming year in those terms.

Also, it mentions a recent NM Supreme court ruling that allows residents re-select uninsured motorist coverages.

I mean, like Drth Vdr said, one can assume that one would not be covered, just like one would perhaps not claim a small or even moderate damage for fear of a premium increase. ;shrug

It just seemed odd that this time around the change occurred.

I have not read that many insurance policies, but I have seen statements that exempt coverage for racing activities. If I was an insurance underwriter, I would not want to cover racing. It is just too high risk an activity.

I spoke with Hagerty today, and apparently they were liable for covering on these situations, for it was not spelled-out within their policy.

I used to be a claims adjuster for one the biggest and cars have never been covered while being used on a race track in competition.

Guess what else? In most cases your life insurance is void if you are racing on a track too. Some companies may offer extra cost riders but it would be wise to check before you go to the drags the next time.

My wife's cousin has raced short track for years. Last spring he wasn't feeling well but went out for his heat race anyway. He had a heart attack and was dead before he hit the wall. The life insurance company would not pay off and they were in their right according to the provisions of the policy.

You will be heard pressed to find a policy that will cover your car or your life while you are racing.

The Hagerty lady told me that there are policies "out there" that would cover racing activities for about an 8 hour period.

Something to consider should anyone of us see a need for it.

Tracks here are required to file VIN numbers with the insurance comission of cars damaged on the track. ie auto crossing and you damage your car and later claim someone hit you in a supermarket parking lot.
