Half Shafts

I just discovered that my '78 L-48 has 3 inch half shafts. Is this a stock item in '78? I do know that I have the FE-7 suspension, could it be because of the Gymkhana that there are 3 inch half shafts? I appreciate any feed back on this.

At some point (can't remember the year), C3 big-blocks used the 3" half-shafts, and they replaced the 2-1/2" shafts for service shortly thereafter when they ran out of the 2-1/2" stock; the 3" shafts are the only ones that have been available from GM for service parts for many years. Don't know if or when the 3" shafts were used in production for small-blocks.

I know on my '81 the manual tranny cars had the beefier U-joints. Some autos (like mine ) also had them; but I wasn't aware there were half shaft size differences. I'll check my books.
