Handling improvements for '84 base suspension

I would like your thoughts on improving a base suspension '84. According to the chart on this forum this in the only C4 with a higher rear spring rate than front (approximately 365 vs 415). I don't want to spend a lot of money - the car needs other work. I would like to stay under $500.00. I really don't want to change springs either if I can help it. I was thinking a 30MM Z51 front sway bar and a "good" set of shocks ($300.00 or less if possible). Koni's are out the budget - but what about the other choises - Monroe - KYB - Delco - TPIS - Mid-America - even Bilstein? What about the rear - should I go to a bigger rear sway bar also - or is it not needed due to the high spring rate? Well what do you guys think? Thanks in advance for any and all advise. Jack

What is your goal? Is there a worn-out issue with the car? (I have a virtually unused set of rear Bilsteins available for under $100, that need a new home.) They are the mid stiffies. (Heck, I was just in the Apple for a day.)

I had bad luck with Monroes; two sets were leakers.

For tightening up the handling, I like poly bushings all around, and the newer stuff needs no periodic greasing. I'd do that before messing with springs.

Easy and cheap is to lower the car, if desired. Front involves the removal of a spacer between the spring and the frame; rear takes longer bolts (2) to the springs. Then align the car, and enjoy the car as a lawn mower (it's so low).

Thanks - the car is a driver 1st weather permitting not an autocrosser or show car. Since the spring rates are so high I would like to take advantage of it (base car '84 rates are close to Z51 later rates). The car has 52k on it but it sat for the better part of the last 15 years - it was a NYC street everyday driver before that so I figure the shocks are tired. Kind of like an excuse to upgrade.
