Hard-wiring Detector the easy way

I have seen several threads about hard-wiring radar detectors to the rear view mirror, to the accessory plug under the center console etc and was planning on using the console method.

The other thing I wanted to do was remove my broken, dirty, sagging sun visors... they looked horrible and I have never used them anyway.

The removal was easier than I thought it would be and there was an added bonus. Each visor has the lighted mirror and a short pigtail powering them. I just clipped the pigtail off the end of one, slpiced it onto the power cord for my detector and Voila! Instant ignition controlled power with no fuss and no muss. I installed the mirror radar detector mount from Mid America and I'm done.

Total time: 15minutes.

Very cool- As I was reading your email, I was gonna ask if you had the dual vanity lighted mirrors in your vette.. But as I followed along, I see you found em!

Good job - Enjoy and watch out for "johnny Law"

I wonder... lots of cars have all the wiring for optional accessories already in place from the factory. Wonder if those of us without the lighted mirrors might still have the plugs back there. I know that my Vette, without the auto climate control, still had the wiring harness for the internal temp sensor above the halo panel.

Worth a shot.... just takes a minute to drop the top bar trim peice & check ....

My visors had two leads, but only one mirror, from the factory. I think they all do. ;)

Toss out a blind question here.

Any harm in splicing off one of those mirror leads for a radar detector?(to share for detector and mirror) or better to pull it from say the Driver's mirror and just dedicate it to the detector?

thanks

We're talkin' about the visor mirors and not the rear view mirror, correct? :L

No, I don't think it'll make a difference if you share the leads, the mirrors don't light until you open the visor. ;)

I think Ken is right, but the driver's side would be best unless there is a woman driver..... *duckandcover*

Yea, the visor mirrors.. BUT come to think of it,
the rear view mirror has power in it too..
I have one or two courtesy lights/map lights in my rear view mirror.

I would think that any one of those sets of leads will work for the radar detector. However, I'd double check the circuits just to be sure they supply enough power to the detector. ;)

I checked the bubba way... hooked it up and it worked... Heh

I understand that the mirror connection works just fine as well, but I didn't want to mess with that. I figured that since I was removing the visors anyway...

BTW: The car seems like it has a lot more headroom without the visor in... looks cleaner too.

:cool You must not drive West at 5pm, or East at 6 am :cool
