All this talk about hardtops got me looking, and I found one supposedly in very good condition. Anyone have an idea on the cost of re-painting? It would be a color change, from white to dark red mettalic.

Thanks in advance

I am no car painter but dark red metalic is a hard color to match but it must be the same color as my roadster :upthumbs I wish you luck though!

May I ask what a used hardtop set ya back? $$$

Still considering buying it, depends on how much it costs to paint it. They're asking $500 for it, in very good condition and including the hardware. I'll call a couple of shops and try to get a rough estimate.

When I bought a used one for my triple-black 90 eight years ago, a repaint cost $600, but that included a bit of fiberglass repair too, it was scratched up a bit. When he was done, it was as good as new. I wonder where that car is now...

The cost of a repaint will vary, I believe you will be able to get a decent color match for around +/-$500.
Does the top have all of the mounting hardware and is the weather stripping in good shape? (the mounting hardware and weather stripping for the tops is pricey)

I have only seen a couple of pictures, need to go see it after I get a rough estimate on repainting. Gonna try and talk him down a little. By the way, is
$500 reasonable for a top in good shape, including hardware and good weatherstripping?

A factory hardtop in good shape, including hardware, and good weatherstripping is a smoking hot deal!!!!

Your lucky that you have a 89 since the earlier verts do not have the mounting points for the hard top. I know a guy with an earlier vert and he had to have mounts fabbed.

If you shoot me an email I will send you a scanned copy of the hard top installation instruction booklet so you can see what your getting into.
Good luck.

I paint only Corvettes and I will tell you a QUALITY repaint for a color change will be around 700.00 The cost of paint has gone up beyond belief. Base coat clear coat paint runs from cheap paint to quality paint. The difference in cost will be the paint that is used. The main difference in paint is how long it will last. Ash whoever paints the top what kind of paint they are using. A cheap clear coat will fade in 2 to 3 years and a quality clear will last forever. As in everything ,you gets what you pay for. The top is in fact the hardest part to match on any vehicle especially a vette.

Thanks, that info helps a lot. Seems to be worth getting the top and having a quality job done on it.

Also your best bet is to give him something to match like the gas lid.On mettallics there are usually a few different variances on the same color code.I have seen up to 7 different variances on one color code.Give him something to go by and he can better chose a variance when mixing the paint.

I used a small town mom and pop place to change my red hardtop to match the medium brown metallic color of my car. They charged $350 in Aug '05. They had saved a quart of paint from my summer of '04 repaint. It turned out very nice!

Couldn't make it this week-end, tire trouble. Hope to see it later this week, depending on how much I blow on tires. I'll let you know if I pass on the top.
