Just curious... does anybody think the "hatch vent" allow exhaust fumes into the cabin ? It sure seems like a lot of backdraft coming in through the gap between the back window and the rear deck... opinions ?

Is their a way to test for exhaust in the cabin ?

Logic says "if pressure inside the cabin is less than the ambient pressure around the car, there is a possibility of the exhaust fumes to enter inside the car through any opening" :) If you blow your ventilation (A/C or Heating) at full power at full power pressure inside the car will increase and hinder the exhaust to enter the interior.

How to test it? Best device so far discovered is your own nose buddy ;LOL

That's my 2Cents anyway, cheers

The only time you should really use your Hatch Vent is when the car is parked, or when the roof is off, when the roof is off and your cruising the trapped air in the hatch area is what causes all the beffeting, cracking the Hatch relieves that.Mart

I've used my hatch vent for about 2 years, cruising around town or at speed on the open highway, and have yet noticed any fumes in the cabin. At highway speeds it reduces buffeting in the cabin.......

Same here.
But I usually have the roof off and the window open. I only use the hatch vent when its warm weather.

There is a great risk of exhaust fumes entering the cabin with the hatch vented and the roof on the car. The hatch vent should ONLY be used with the roof off, period. Don't just rely on your nose to tell you if you have exhaust fumes entering the cockpit. There are other harmful gases in your exhaust besides carbon monoxide, not all of these are detectable by odor.

Hi Ted

I put a hatch vent on mine last week, the top has been off. While warming up in the garage there were some fumes. We didn’t notice anything while running down the road. I thought there was a little more buffeting at speed. Windows up or down didn’t make much difference. I think there is a little more aero drag, I found it easier to stay closer to the posted speed limit. It is still hard to keep it in the 65/70 mph range.

Still got the :D Bill :w

I used a Hatch Vent from Gadget Man last summer, mostly with the roof in. Made no difference, in town or an all day freeway cruise, I've never encountered a problem.

By that I mean no odurs and I haven't fallen asleep behind the wheel yet!

If I thought CO was coming into the car, I wouldn't use it!!

Just on the notion of testing for CO in the car, I wonder if one of those testers made for use in a house would show anything?

Ron ... :w

There is a CO tester used in light aircraft. Its about the size of a busness card and changes color if CO is present and no power needed. It comes with double sticky tape to stick on the dash. :w

have had mine about 2 years with no problems. Yes some fumes get in (its like the old station wagons from the 70s with the electric rear glass..)
there is always a risk of exhaust fumes entering the car when its sitting still.

Hi Everyone,

I have an 1987 corvette, and have massive fume problems entering the cabin.

If i have my windows open, the fumes come into the cabin very badly.

By the end of a nights drive, my clothes and hair absolutely reak of exhaust fumes. Its terrible. But its impossible to drive with the windows closed all the time.

Also,is there a way to stop the fumes from cars in front of you coming in? With newer cars, you can hit the recirculating air button, but with the vette, it seems you cant choose that. That sux :(

FYI CO is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It's called the Silent Killer for good reason, you may never feel sleepy or tired - you'll just pass out.

That CANT BE GOOD! This is with the hatch vent also? If so I'd get rid of it FAST!

If no hatch vent and thats happening.... That seems a serious problem. A good friend of mine once drove their old pontiac catalina to school and he passed out in the parking lot! It turned out the exhaust was leaking into the cabin. :puke

But with windows closed there are no fumes? There may be a leak from your headers back since there shouldnt be any exhaust coming from front of car when driving with windows open.

If you reek that badly there must be a leak somewhere! Not only could it kill you but some innocent bystander if you pass out while driving!

PS I'd have to double check manual but I think fresh air only enters cabin on "vent". The Heat,Bi-lev,AC and Defrost settings ARE only recirculating.

I would put money exhaust will get into the car with the hatch-vent. Bernoulli's Principal states that a lower pressure area will cause suction, and the interior will be lower pressure with all of the air traveling around it.

Plus, you have probably seen all of the dust that collects near the break lights and on the rear deck. That is from back-flow of exhaust and wind.

I think rolling down your windows is your best and safest bet!

Hope this helps!
