Got everything off tne hood and am now down to the gear motor. Got the 3- screw cover off the gear motor too. Problem... The thread I was following said to remove the wormwheel. Mine refuses to come out. The wheel turns freely nothing seems to be stuck, but when I try to get the shaft & wheel assembly free of the gear housing it won't come out. Looking at the instructions I was using, there is a boss at the back of the gear housing where I assume the output shaft rides and it appears to be open such that the shaft could be driven out Wheel and all. Mine however has the shaftbearing-housing integral with the gear/motor housing. No access to the rear of the housing. Any thoughts on how to get the worm&wheel out would be much appreciated.

I think that was the same on my '88 and was probably the reason I went in through the top, as explained in my reply to Rob, earlier......Roger.

I found one side easier than the other and discovered that the large worm gear with integrated shaft is the same part used on either side. However, there is a lip on one side of that large worm gear. Depending on which side you are working, either the gear comes right out because this lip is near the cover plate and does not pass over the smaller gear. Otherwise, it moves just a little then stops because it is binding with the lip. If you clear away some of the grease you should see it. I loosened up the motor side to provide enough small gear side play to remove. Do not take the motor apart.

Hi Charles, I was not about to create more play in the wormdrive/gear assembly, so as I said went in through the top. From memory the only tricky bit is holding apart the bushes, for re-assembly. I used two paper clips for this and it went smoothly. I think the second one took about 15 minutes start to finish.....Roger.
