The slider that controls the AC,heat, ect seems to be stuck. The other slider under that one works fine.Does this work by cable, vacume or electrical switch? How do I fix? Thanks.

If memory serves it controls vacuum hoses. (GM engineering design of their MVAC controls leave a lot to be desired IMHO) The temp slider is, again if memory serves, controlling a cable - but not sure on late C3s. I presume jiggling or gently lifting it up and down while pushing does not free it. Maybe some little piece of junk fell in and has jammed it? Crazy idea but if that's possible - maybe blowing some air in there...??? But if it's 'stuck' as in it's mechanically stuck it will probably have to be removed to inspect/repair/replace.

The slider you are talking about works with a cable. The one below works on vaccum. Mine also got stuck. It turned out the clip that holds the two parts for the vaccum operated lever had seperated and was obstructing the upper lever. If its the same case on yours you should hear vaccum leaking near the switch.

I suggest you check the cable in case thats the problem. The cable goes from the switch to the top of the heater core box. It opens and closes a door. If the cable operates smoothly its probably the clip in the switch, its plastic and tends to break. I was able to fix mine. It took about 3 hours a a serve your self scrap yard. The parts in our switch are still used in some cars today and are interchangeable. Considering the low cost of switch I recommend replacing it with a new one.

zgator here is something I posted to another Thread about about the same problem, the photo should help some ;) I believe your 82 is the same design ;)

Note the top left drawing.
On the opposite side of the vacuum hoses is the heat control lever. This lever fits into a Cam that has a diaphram that moves across grooves in the cam to control the vacuum switching of the temp by moving the temperature control cable...

What probably has happened is the lever (Switch Lever) was forced at sometime and has either jumped out of the track or has broken where it fits into the track.

I took my apart and fixed the lever, only to have it jump out of the cam after about a year and half :mad Next I went in and made a small plastic washer to fit over the lever between the lever and the point where it attached to the cam. That took care of the problem ;)

If you do take this switch out, I suggest you have an assy. manual handy and lots of patience... it is spring loaded and has to go back together right for the cam and the diaphram to function properly. I did it all from the passenger side with the seat out and with both side panels off the console.

Good Luck

Bud

If it is broke I would get a new one from Zip instead of trying to fix it. It's pricey, but a new one should last for several years.
