heater core replacement????

i have to replace the heater core in my 90, i have heard that one can replace it without havingto pull the whole dash pad anyone tried this ,or is it a wives tale?????

there is a shortcut to replacing the core, but the 90 is unique and cant be done except via service manual proceedure.
