I need to replace the heater core on my 78 Vette with factory A/C.

Do you remove it from the engine side of the firewall or from inside the passenger compartment? I've heard both stories.

Also if there are any tips to make the job easier I would be greatful to hear them.

Thanks in advance!

Inside passenger side not a easy job .sorry no tips ...

I would think the inside would be bad. The dash and everything. And I would also think that the core is easier accessed from the engine bay, but I don't know about clearance room or anything like that.

It will only pull out from the inside you have to remove the blower/vent box .
If you remove the evaporator box from the engine compartment you will only see part of the back side mainly the control luver there isen,t even a big enought hole to remove it here, and it's mounted from the inside .
I found this out when I removed my A.C.

It will definitely have to come out from the inside. If I remember correctly one of the bottom studs can be drilled out and then just use a self taping bolt when reinstalling. On the older models you could remove just the passenger side of the dash. But with the later style I think you will need to remove the whole dash. You may be able to loosen it enough to get the unit by but it will make for tight working space and if you twist the dash it too much you could damage it. I think it makes it easer to remove the whole dash. It takes a little time and is a pain to replace the heater core with AC but with time and patience you can get it done. Hope this helps a little. :)

heater core replacement

I replaced the heater core myself in my 76, the worst part of the job is the alignment of the dash and ductwork. I worked from the inside, but had to pull the duct work including the driver side. I used my AIM and Haynes manual for reference. I think Haynes called this a 4 hour job.... took me about 7. Like I said most of my time was spent on the dash and ductwork. I also replaced my radiator. If you choose to do this yourself, give yourself a full day so that you can take your time to insure a proper fit on the dash. The center bazel is a 3 cigarette or a three beer job, do not let the kids hang around during this process.:hb
