After some detective work (and advice from the CAC), I have determined that my heater core has a slight leak. Where can I find detailed information on changing it out? The Chevrolet chasis manual is a little sketchy.

misery

That is how I can describe my heater core replacement...

I took a few detailed pics when I replaced mine...will post them for ya later today along with some more info.

The biggest PITA was getting to the heater hose clamps.
Also, to remove the heater box, there are 3 screws holding it in place on the inside & there is 1 screw inside the engine compartment. I believe it is one of the top screws (maybe the left?)

You do have to remove the pass. side dash & the center console. Be very careful with the center console...do not pull at it from the top!! It will break.

I got my heatercore form tld-corvette. I was going to buy the Delco replacement, but they called back and said they were out of stock. They talked me into another core, about $20-$30 less & said that this one & the Delco were exactly the same & made by the same co. It fit pretty good except that I couldn't screw it down properly with the old camp...

now some pics

This one shows the box coming out...
I already removed the heater hoses and plugged the pipes with some rags. I placed some pink plastic all around to keep the coolant from getting all over the rug. Once I removed all 4 bolts holding it in place, it came out fairly easily.

This pic is a close up. I put a yellow arrow showing the bolt that goes thru the firewall. You have to get at this one from inside the engine compartment. From the inside of the pass. side, I thought this was a rivit and that I have to just give the heater box a good yank to pull it off. Wrong! I would have broke the damn thing if I pulled on it some more. The other 3 bolts you get to from the pass. side.

THanks Tony.....

Gonna start droppingthe dash down tomight. Will post pictures as I screw it up.

This part of the project was a PITA. You need to seperate the plastic heater box from the metal frame which basically holds the heater core in place. There was tons of glue or silicon which bonded these two together. I used one of those hack saw blades to pry them apart. It was thin, flat, long and sharp enough to seperate them. All I can say is be patient and careful when you do this, I ended up breaking a piece of plastic on the heater box doing this...nothing major...and I fixed it no prob...

It's all out

When I first got the box out, I tried replacing the core working inside the car to save myself some work...but I eventually pulled the whole thing out...it would have been better to work with this on the bench when trying to seperate the metal frame from the box...

The rest you can probably figure yourself out...it will all make sense when you see it.

I had a previous thread detailing my nightmare on dealing with those heater hoses...This caused me much grief! 69myway suggested dabbing a little silicon on the heater pipes before you slip on the hoses...This was a great suggestion. The first time I clamped the hoses down I had major leaks! And I didn't know if I had the clamps on too loose or too tight. The silicon trick worked well and I've had no leaks since. It also made those hoses real nice and easy to slide on!

Pic of it all out...

About 2 months ago, the heater core in my S-10 blew, and the circumstances were great. I was driving my date home and i started to smell it, and then she noticed coolant running out of the heating vents all over her feet. Crappy end to a good night. Replacing it was a pain too.
