Does anyone have a heater control valve for a 84 coupe, or can tell me how to correctly bypass it? I can not afford the $140 for a new one right now, and it's getting o the point that I may need some heat or at least the defrosters. Please help me if you can, Thanks

Not sure, but some models have a small water line near the EGR port/dist area, in the rear of the intake that runs over to the heater control valve where it merges with the water return line.

I took the control valve out. This leaves the core with 2 fittings, and 2 heater hoses near the a/c compressor. A simple matter to fill in the gap with barbed fittings made to join 2 pieces of hose together. One side has the 5/8 hose and the core nipple will be larger so you know which is which. The other is 1/2".
On one or the other, install a "T" with the appropiate reducers to get down to the size of the small water line from the back of the intake...3/8 I think.

This allows water to flow thru the core all the time. Mine is wired to circulate full time and has not been a problem as far as cold air being available inside the cabin. I was more concerned with keeping the core wet to prevent it from rusting/rotting out.

You CAN bypass the core altogether and just loop the heater hoses together with the T fitting so the 3rd small hose has a place. That eliminates the core and risk it drying out causing some repairs (non-fun repairs) somewhere down the road.

This is'nt free...you have to buy some brass fittings, some heater hose, some hose clamps and have a few tools. Not as much as a new control valve but not a $5 fix either....(to do right)

Thanks guys, I will certainly look into these replies and see if i can fix it.

GM engineers put it there to vent steam from the rear of heads.
Strange thing is nobody has cooling problems on stock L98 heads when running one of the many aftermarket intakes that don't
have that vent provision.
Maybe like the TB heating it was a worst case scenario provision ?
Mine has been deleted for 10 years with no probs

Help

I think I need to see a picture of a stock set up on another 84. My car was bypassed when i got it, and I only had one line going to the front of the car with the small line into the valve. the other line looked like it went from the valve to the bacl of the intake. They had it bypassed by going straight from thr water pump to the back of the intake. And that's how it is now. Soooooooooo do I have a line missing?
