I would like to replace the transmission shifter selector leather boot.
I am not sure how to get the ball off the end of the shifter so I can slip the new leather boot on. I am affraid I will break the shifter if I do not take the ball off properly. The car is an 82 with automatic trans. Advice will be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
I agree with bobchad, but thats for a 77...your 82 might very well be different, I sugguest looking at it very close and see if theres an alan screw or any kind of bolt holding it in place, and poke around the cap to see if it comes off , there should be a nut holding it on under the cap , i once had a vega 4 speed and had to use a steering wheel puller to get it off..needless to say it tore it up removing it, just take your time and patience ..you'll get it ...sherry:)

Well the 80 comes apart the same way as Bob described. Just use your hands so you don't break or mark up the anything. Good luck

The above posts are correct ,, I have an 82 unscrew the chrome button and then the black knob !!!

Thanks for all the great info. Yes I tried to unscrew the button and it came off easily there was a spring below the button. I looked closely and there were no allen screws or pins holding the ball in place. first attempts at unscrewing the ball with both hands has "not" been successful. It must be on very tight. Most 82's I've seen have a black ball mine happens to be chrome. Below the ball on the shifter shaft there are a small amount of threads showing so the ball must be screwed on it just seems that more force must be applied to unscrew it.
Again thanks for everyones help.

Someone may have used Loctite or some similar compound to keep the ball tight. Try a hairdryer on it for a minute or so. If you have an adjustable heat gun, that would work, too (on "low") - I think a non-adjustable heat gun would scorch the knob.

Mine is chrome too....

Thanks I'll give the hair dryer a try.
I put it in after seeing one and i really liked the effect of the chrome. Mine came off fairly easy , and i didnt see any other means of it being held in place..sounds like someone got tired of it turning and did it up with some type of thread locker. I really like the hair drier and strap wrench. Take your time you will get it.

Yes, the '82 unscrews counterclockwise for the buttom and the knob. The knob comes off pretty hard, but it will unscrew with a little persuasion. Strap wrench should work.
