HELP! carb/manifold problems?? who knows. any help appreciated!

the car was idling fine but whenever i revved it up or gave it gas it wanted to stall and i had to let off. i was checkin around the engine and smelled gas. i removed the air cleaner assembly and noticed some gas pooling up on the front right side of the intake manifold. i then noticed that something looked broken on the carb. anyone know what this is and what i should do and if its suppsoed to be in two pieces!!? :mad thanks guys. its just one more step to getting this car in good running order!!

the part you have circled is the secondary throttle lock out that prevents the secondary from opening till the choke is completely off. looks fine to me

ok. thanks man. if thats supposed to be in two pieces like that then thats not my problem. for some reason the car isnt getting enough gas. its getting too much air and underneath the party i circled and to the right of it on the intake manifold a little bit of gas is pooling up. when i rev up the car and it gets to a certain RPM the engine pops. if im driving it and go to give it gas it seems to choke and want to cut out and then will kick back in for a second. any idea whats wrong??

-Use due caution here...

Yes, the part you have circled looks to be OK, -it is a T-shank on the end of your Secondary/Throttle-shaft which impinges against another part that is a portion of the front Primary/Throttle-shaft. However, any gasoline outside of the carburetor is a serious fire-hazzard, so you really need to promptly investigate the problem further, ---i certainly would'nt drive it regularly until finding just what's causing the seeming leakage. From your discription it sounds like you could possibly have a failing/Fuel-pump at lower-right of engine (unless the '81's instead have an elect.pump in the fuel-tank); -and a leak-down test will show if it is faulty, and if the outside fuel-pool is just from your flooding the engine while trying to get it running properly (although a flooded carb. should'nt really leak gasoline). If the carburetor is original, do not let anyone talk you into replacing it (a Rochester/Rebuild-kit is the proper procedure), --unless the throttle-shafts have obvious free-play; -as most often a rebuilt is even worse. Always have a proper fire-extinguisher handy when so tinkering (remember a spark from your ignition can ignite lingering fuel-vapors... ~Bob vH

Before you jump to the conclussion that the pooling is gas, is it a dark colored thick liquid that is around the center of the intake and could be on either side? I thought that my carb was leaking as well until somebody here told me that it was oil being pushed up through the threads of the intake manifold bolts. Sure enough, thats what it was.

thanks for the information. i dont really know carbs too well, but im getting into it. i dont think its a fuel pump, but im gonna check that out. i beleive that the gas is leaking from a gasket somewhere on the carb. where can i obtain a rochester rebuild kit? i work at an auto part store part time and we can get professionally remanufactured carbs so im gonna look into that. when i noticed the gas i cleaned it up and rolled the car back into the garage. hopefully i can get this all cleared up.

why would the oil be doing that? it seemed to smell like gas but who knows. what did you do to fix it?

I assume you've checked the fuel line connection to the carb? and that it is not leaking? Quads are notorious for sucking the manifold gaskets causing rough idle and poor performance to the point it won't start.

Quick check is start the car then cover the mouth of the carb with both ands and smother it, the engine should die. Another trick is to squirt WD40 around the base of the carb, if there is a leak the idle will smooth out for a bit then once the WD40 is sucked gone, it will idle rough..

As BobVH stated keep a fire ext. close by ;) until you get this resolved..

Good luck

thanks for the info guys.

the car seems to idle fine, but only get rough when i give it gas. i will give it gas, the engine will choke, then make a pop sound then i will let off the gas and it goes back to a smooth idle. it seems that the engine itself is not getting enough fuel when i bring up the rpms.

the car has 65k miles but did have periods where it sat and from the looks of it, it prob needs a new intake manifold gasket anyway. doesnt look like too hard of a job?

ill have to check the fuel line entering the carb because the puddles are appearing in that area. although it smells like gas, im thinking that perhaps it might be oil, when i did a tune up a week ago the two plugs closest to the right nose of the car were kinda of oil fouled. thats prob not a good thing?

oh and anyone know where to get that carb rebuild kit? thanks again
