Help - fast repeaters (?) and fading air con display

Hello everyone,

First post here and first off i've got to say I LOVE MY VETTE!

It's a 98 Six Speed and over here in the UK stands out a mile!
Especially with an SLP Loudmouth on it, hehe! :-)

However, I have got a couple of problems at the mo that I'm hoping you can help me with (over here coming across someone who knows about Corvettes is not easy!)

1st - my right hand side indicators (do you call the repeaters/flashers or something) flash very quickly, and much faster than those on the left. They only started doing this recently and none of the bulbs are out. I've heard of indicators flashing fast when a bulb goes but as I say, all bulbs appear to be fine.

2nd - the display for my aircon unit is a bit random, and is often very very faint when I get into the car in the morning. The weather's cold over here now and I thought it might be mist on the inside of the display but i'm not sure because it sometimes gets brighter when you press the display a bit. Does it sound like an electrical problem (it seems to get better the longer I run the car)? If I need to replace the display - is this an expensive job?

Obviously everything for a Corvette in the UK costs huge amounts but i'm hoping it won't be too prohibitive.

Just as an example a 97 model C5 with 30,000 miles on it will cost over $32,000+ (if converted from british pounds)! I've seen new Z06's for the equivalent of about $80,000+.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated!

Chris

Wecome to the CAC. I always like to see people appreciate Corvettes in other countries.

There are lots of people who know more about 'vette diagnosis and repair than I do, but I would replace the indicator bulbs. It is fairly easy and fairly cheap, and that has often been the problem when I have experienced the rapid flashing. I don't know anything about your other issue. Does the A/C work correctly? Is the weak display seen mostly when it is cold? I would suspect some limitations of the display itself. Do you know somebody else who has a similar Corvette that you could compare it to?

Enjoy your 'vette and remember to drive on the left!

As far as the A/C Display goes.. if memory serves me correctly (been a while since I've seen one) it's the standard GM LCD display... which tend to over time loose their responsiveness in cold weather. As you have described it; the display will improve with time after it's running, so that would lead me to think the problem is just an inherrent flaw with the system and old man winter. Easiest and most likely only thing you can do is replace the faceplate... shouldn't be too hard, unless the dang thing is hooked into the GEM (General Electronic Module) somehow with an ID, then you may trip a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code)... hrmmm...

Well.. hope this helps some...

And for what it's worth... I love english cars, own a 1969 Triumph TR6 and 1961 TR-3A.. both in desperate need of restoration.
