Lurked here for couple years while looking for a Vette to restore, then realized that as a resto-rookie I should take on something less valuable for my first project. So, I am restoring a 64 Corvair Spyder Turbo Vert. At least it's one of the most desireable Corvairs and if I screw something up I will not have ruined a $60,000 classic.

I have a couple scissors jacks and a Corvair club member mentioned that I may have a Corvette jack in the bunch. From searching I know that Noland (?) identifies them in one of his books, but I don't have that resource, nor photos.

Is there any tell-tale way to identify a Corvette jack from a Corvair jack? I believe a Vette jack handle has 3 holes vs. 1 for Vair, but am not sure of that either - and the handles seem to be similar for both cars.

Thanks for the help. If I have a Vette jack it might as well end up in the correct car instead of in my Spyder's trunk.

With the jack opened up, you'll see the numbers on the top of the bottom plate. SJ4653 I believe.

A Corvair jack has an extra 'tab' punched and turned up on the lift pad and a Vet jack don't.

For years I carried a 'Vair jack & handle in my vet but the jack storage well filled with water (typical hatch drain plugged up) and ruined it over one winter.

My other car is a '62 Corvair.

The photo below is a Corvette Type I jack, used on '63-'64 Corvettes - note the angular ramp on top, the hole, the "A" stamped near the end of the ramp surface, and the sealed ball bearing at the hex drive end. The handle had no holes, either in the top or the sides of the channel section. The Type II jack ('65-E66) and Type III jack (L66-'67) differed slightly and had holes in the handle - two in the Type II and three in the Type III.
