Kevin,
Go pickup a copy of Corvette Fever, Sept 2004 issue on your newstand now.
Under the Shark Bites section is an article from a guy having trouble with his horns. It has a good explanation of how the system works and some things to check. It sounds like your problem is in the steering column, have you had the horn button off lately?

Get a Clymer or Chilton manual (cheap) that has wiring diagrams in the back as backup.

Sometimes all the garbage in the steering column gets gummed up, parts wear, parts broken, etc. Think how many times you move the steering wheel and the horn doesn't sound, thats alot of use....other than that, I suggest you at least wave when it goes off unexpectedly, looks better than honking and not waving.

Let us know how it goes, we'll help all we can.

My first thought was a broken motor mount...(just my 02)

I had the same problem with my '75. Everytime I turned the steering wheel either direction or hit a bump the horn would sound. What I discovered was a real easy fix. Remove the horn center cap. You'll see a metal ring that has 3 holes. Each hole should have what looks like a plastic rivet. On mine, two of them were decayed and broken, which caused that ring to swivel around on the one rivet that remained, causing contact with the metal to sound the horn. I used small tie-wraps through the holes where the rivets had decayed and to the outside of the metal ring, pulled them tight into place, cut away the leftover and have not had a problem since.

thanks ... it was under the button, thanks Dave Z

I had the same problem with my 68. I actually purchased all the parts to rebuild the horn under the button. Once I got everything replaced, it was still quite touchy (but not while turning or hitting bumps...only when pressing). I took a screw driver to the center ring and spread the contact out a little more and now I have a horn with no probs.

It's amazing how something so simple can give you the most grief!
