Hi Guys, I'm a newbe - sorry if my question sounds inane or has been discussed a gazillion times before...
Just bought a '90 C4. Car is in great shape w. only~36Kmiles. The exhaust has been replaced by the previous owner with one taken off a '94. When he replaced the exhaust (everything below the headers was replaced), he removed the cats. So now the car has the original headers welded to a 'cat-free' '94 exhaust. I'm living in Israel and here there's no requirement for '90 cars to have cats, so legally I'm ok.

I've been told two different things about the 'missing' cats:
a. That this is actually an advantage, since I'm getting less back pressure, hence more power.
b. That this can actually cause problems, since the lambda probe (which is still in its original place at the lower end of the left header) 'counts' on back pressure due to the cats, and may fail to function properly when they're not there.

Can anyone guide me? Should I get new cats and put them in? Should I replace the lambda probe with one that's self-heating, so that it still works properly now that there's less back-pressure/ lower temperature? Something else? Please no buck-heavy solutions. There are no spares locally - have to get everything from the U.S. which makes things rather costly. Thanks

lambda probe? I assume you mean the oxygen sensor. It does not measure backpressure, only exhaust temps. If your gas mileage is on average ~18-20mpg then you dont need to do anything to it because its not reading a problem.

In some rare occasions removing the cats causes the O2 sensor to read too little heat, and the engine richens the mixture to compensate and destroys your gas mileage. If yours isnt doing so, then youre golden.

There is no need for backpressure in your exhaust, and you probably have 10-15hp more because of this.

Thanks Vader, I'll check the millage. What if it's significantly worse than 18~20mpg? Should I get a sensor that's self-heating? Would that ascertain that I get proper readings and get the mpg back to normal? Thanks again
