Help needed with Automatic Trans

I own an 86 coupe and have already 2 years problems with my automatic gearbox.

in the beginning very rarely but now more and more often

I start the car in P and put it in D start to drive
normally at 2500 revs the gear should be switched.
and then again untill I reach the 70 km/h (30miles/h) I should upshift to OD for better economy.

now the gear only switch at 5000revs and again at 5000revs. at 70km/u the upshift sign comes and I put it in OD but no shift is coming.

btw when the engine temperature raises to normal operating temperature the problem fades and is not noticeable anymore

could this be my gearbox worn out or something else ?

please help me out

What color is the fluid. Does it have a "burnt" odor?

it is brand new oil + filter,I noticed the garage putting some oil in it and the problem was gone, only now it threw out this oil because it was too full.

after he stopped draining het problem appeared again.

the level seems ok

A shop familiar with American automatic transmissions might be able to diagnose the problem. It could be a problem with the trans governor but it also could be something else.

That tansmission is the 4L60 (also known in the mid-80s as TurboHydra-matic 700R4) is used in many GM vehicles. Over in Europe, you'll find them in some Chevy and GMC trucks.

If there is no automatic transmission specialist available and you're comfortable with DIY auto. trans work, the factory service manual for an 87 may hold some solutions.

If you not comfortable with DIY auto trans work, I'd order a reman. transmission from the U.S. and have it installed.

Went to the local Corvette Garage today
they added 2,5 liters ( half a gallon ) gearbox oil :confused

It had something to do with the winterstorage I have every year.

So I was a happy chap for about 2 hours, because when I checked the car I saw he puked out a lot of the freshly filled oil.

am I facing a new gearbox ??

you are using the correct fluid as specified in the manual?

Hopefully, I'm not the only one confused. Let's start all over again using these terms for what's put into various parts of the car...

oil - goes into the engine

fluid - goes into the transmission

gear lube - goes into the differential.

Both the engine and transmission have filters. Are you saying that the transmission fluid and filter were changed and that the mechanic overfilled the transmission?

If the tranny fluid had not been changed for a long time (like 80+ thousand mi), and then you had it serviced it can cause this type of problem I have read several times.

If I recall correctly it has something to do with how much thicker the old tranny fluid is than the fresh, and the tranny will be do for a rebuild. Cha-ching $$. Sorry.

sorry, the garage uses the correct fluid to fill the transmission.

every two years my filter gets changed and I drive about 10k miles a year.

the mechanic was mentioning something about a (rubber gasket)
between the torque connector and the transmission housing

when the car sits in storage for long time the fluid get back into the transmission housing and causing an overflow.

(hope I explained correctly)

I feel getting sick already by the thought of a rebuild.
just got over an engine rebuild before the storage and now 2 days after I took it out of storage this happens.

the fluid my corvette garage uses is the same as they use to fill the power steering reservoir.

this fluid is red colored and thicker and stickier than engine oil which is brown and more greasier.


both Valvoline brand.
