Option J65, Sintered Metallic Brake Shoes, was available in '63 and '64 on Corvettes and full-size Chevies. Unless you raced full time, these HD brake shoes pretty much lasted forever. However, those of us driving older Vettes with this option are now finding that we unable to replace them when they do finally fade away. Seemingly, the only option is to remove this option from the car and revert back to regular brakes. Does anyone know of a source for these? Or does anyone know of a person or company who can re-line these neat old metallics? Thanks a lot!

I do not have a link or phone number, but try to find Porterfield Brakes and get their carbon kevlar liners for your vette. These work very nicely. G.

Thanks, Gord (Gordon? My name too)
Judging by the partial view of the drum, my guess is that this is the Z06/J56 brakes (11.2" dia.), not my J65 brakes (11.0" dia.). Besides, I already have several sets of used metallics :) :)
The Z06/J56 folks are facing the same problem I am though, no replacement shoes and no re-lining available! That's where we need help.
Thanks! Pete

Geopar!

As a matter of fact, I tried Porterfields first and got no reply. Odd. But I guess that means they can't help.

If I am not able to get any help with my original metallics, and they start to fail, I'll look into a modern replacement. But these original metallics are, well, original not to mention very cool, and I would like to keep my car original for as long as I can.
Thanks! Pete

Pete,

I told Pattie you would find the help you need on this Forum, welcome, and come again.

If you can't find any sintered shoes (and don't want to take out a home equity loan to buy them), try the linings from Carbotech (www.carbotech.com); have heard good things about them from J-56 guys who have used them.

THANKS JohnZ!
I am familiar with CarboTech, visited their site looking for J65 /J56 replacements a while back (nope). If I reach a point where the old metallics will no longer hold me back, I'll do what I have to do and get back in touch with Carbotech. For now, I'm holding out for a sympathetic re-liner out there!

I bought a new OEM front and rear set for my 62 fourty plus years ago. Two years ago we checked the fronts and rears thinking that they should be inspected and replaced plus also service the hydraulic system at the same time as they had never been touched since new either. To my suprise they were almost like new. All we did is check, clean and lubricate the whole system and put it back together with the same old parts. They do not wear like friction brakes. At the rate that I drive it, they may last forever. :D The point is that yours may still be serviceable.

Hiya Wally!
Yup, I am WELL aware that these seemingly last forever. But last time I looked at the fronts (~91K miles), they were starting to look a little thin. Actually, you often find that the drums will go before the shoes - it happens! But bottom line is, SOMEDAY those shoes will be gone. And I need to find a shoe re-liner who can bring them back for me.
