Car and Driver tested the 300 C thing and said top speed 173, that's dagum close to stock '04 Vette. There's always a bigger fish out there. I might have to go get one of those bigger fish. If I do it won't be anything but a Corvette though. A Corvette is SUPPOSED to be faster than a 'tang or Charger or a Chrysler. It should be faster right out of the box. If GM can't hang and it looks like they can't maybe at least the two seater will stay around. Pontiac and Buick could be gone and even with the new Cadillacs they're already behind. Mustangs were never built to compete with the Corvette and I don't think they can. Lots of horses don't make the car its the whole package but I still want to be the fastest. This post kind of rambles. Sorry, I hope you guys get my point. Getting Sleeepppyyyy.

My experiences wth a 'stang were such that it could go real fast..... in a straight line. My Vette, on the other hand, just loves the twistys!!

Top speed is nothing, how many times you cruise even close to top speed. Look at acceleration. I think we still got them all there.

I read that review and have some doubts about the claimed top speed, not that C/D has ever fudged test numbers or reviews before... =;-]

From their own site I got some numbers for frontal area, drag area and calculated RWHP for both the 300C SRT8 and the Z06.

The 300C has has 50% more drag area [FA * Cdx], 24% HIGHER Cdx and with only 5% more RWHP exceeds the top speed of the Z06 by 2 mph???

This doesn't even sound right, at 173 mph 50% more drag area is a HUGE amount and would likely require a lot more than 17 hp over the Z06 to reach.

Anyone know how to calculate hp needed to reach a particular speed based on FA and Drag Area with Cdx?

You would have to see what force is required. I know that force of drag is = .5*Air density*Cd*Area of car*speed^2. Then you could calculate force forward as torque at the rear wheels I think. When the numbers match, thats the top theoretical speed

Either Mr. Vortech or Mr. Magnusson would be the consultant I would choose to assist with this perplexing question.:D

Is the top speed in a c5 limited by drag/horsepower or a fuel management function? I'm guessing the compter shuts you down like 6000 rpm limit.
Which like a 173 top speed is really fast enough. Though I haven't been to 173. too concerned about unforunate events that could take place there.

Its limited by drag/ hp in the sense that you can achieve top speed in 5th gear when it reaches the rpm limits but 6th gear is too weak to accelerlate up to the rpm limit.

Or one of those new zo6 LS7 crate engines! SOMEONE get to work on a way for that engine to interface with the c5 computer!

You gotta draw the line somewhere. I mean, they can make one of those riceburners faster than a Corvette but would anyone take that riceburner seriously?

Just do what I do and tell them, "It's a Corvette" with a big :D on your face. If they have to ask why, they wouldn't understand.

Just wanted to add this formula to the discussion. I found it while making a research paper for my physics course...I used the corvette as an example :)
F= CdAV^3/150,000

Be aware that the z06 is also underrated.

Now I havent run the numbers for the cars mentioned here, but based on Robert's estimates, that is complete bull****. If the 300C even had 5 percent more drag and 5 percent more horsepower, it wouldn't have a chance in hell of beating the z06's top speed.

I saw a show the Dodge Test Drive on the Speed Channel this weekend. Although it looks like they tried NOT to show the ET but it looks like it only ran a 15 something in the 1/4 mile. I'm not impressed.

hp

if the only factor in your equation is H.P.,then buy a viper, the hemi you mentioned,a ferrari or any of the numerous other cars out there with more than a vette.what you won't have is A VETTE!!!I don't care what it is,if it ain't a vette, what;s the point??!!

Yup, by a whopping 5 hp. At least according to the recent editor's comment in this month's edition of Corvette Fever. He says it's 505. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the new Z. It's got plenty cohones!!:D
