Hi,does anybody know which year the high level brakelight came out on the c4,did it come as an option from the start?

Cheers in advance

Mike

The first year for the high level brake lights was in 88 if my information is correct.

Ron
"Baldie88"

It first appeared in '86. I believe it was a federal mandate for safety.

John

Strange,as someone i know has got an 84 with it on,could it have been added?

Jester is the winner.

The first year for the third Brake light was 86, you can buy aftermarket kits.

86 was a banner year for the vette,
  • 1st time the 3rd brake light came out
  • Malcom Conner SE
  • Pacecar
  • Comeback of the convertable
  • Aluminum Heads
  • ABS
  • First LT5 went into an 86.
  • GM signed agreement with Callaway tested on 86's production on 87's

Yes, in the verts it was fitted into the bumper above the letters "CORVETTE" and in the coupes it was fitted at by the targa.

It was 1986, all new cars that year had to have the useless and unnecessary high mounted brake light.

I would hesitate to call the extra light useless and unnecessary. It is operated by a separate switch and is independent of the regular brake lights.
I was once behind a car on a city expressway that had only the third light working. I was very glad it was there.

Sure is a pain in the butt to change on verts...
