I have a chance to buy a real nice 98 with 82K at a very good price. How many miles can iI expect to get out of the LS1 and how much would a rebuild be. Thanks in advance Jim.

HI there,
As long as there is correct service maintenance records, you can get 200k out of the driveline, without a major overhaul.
However, if it was NOT maintained, it could be a disaster.
I would have the car correctly checked out by your local Corvette specialist.

With 82K on the clock I bet it one heck of a "deal". Just make sure a guy like Mr. Mojo did not have it first.

Also dont expect to get much when you are looking to move it on.

Warren,

I'm kind of wondering... Who is Mr. Mojo?

Jim,

If it has been maintained, look into it further. If it hasn't been maintained, it should be out of the question. Maybe they're all highway miles on there?

It was not ment as a "slur". Mr. Mojo (Frank) enjoys using his Corvette for what it was meant for. He is a very good guy to know and a great resource for information.

Warren,

I didn't take it as a slur or anything negative. I just thought he was some cartoon character from "back in the day" or something like that. LOL.:L :L :L

We have a 98 Coupe just traded in with 132K miles. This car is as clean as any on the lot. Guy drove it to work every day and had a 100 mile trip. :)

engine vs. trans

It seems to me that one would worry more about rebuilding an auto. trans. or putting in a clutch/flywheel, etc. than an engine rebuild. The v8 is pretty bullet proof from what I have seen. And even the idiots do oil changes.

I hear the trans. is much more difficult with the C5 than the C4, I think C5 is a transaxle whereas C4 has separate units.

I would buy it in a heartbeat. Of course it depends on its care by previous owner. The cosmetics will tell you alot if you have no history about it.

That's me!!!:L :L :L

I have a 97 C5 I bought Feb of 2000 (w/222mi). I put 22,000mi the first year.
Then I took a job 90 miles away. I now have 107,000mi.
I replaced the clutch with a z06 kit w/z06 slave @85,000.
I turned rotors and replaced pads @ 90,000 (rotors were in great shape!)
I installed Bilstein sports @100,000.
This particiular LS1 does not drink oil. (It's down about 1/4 to 1/2 qt. each oil change.)
The cats are blown and do make a annoying, buzzing/rattling noise, but when they are replaced I'm good to go another 100,000.

Another thing, I do take this car to the 1/4 mile track everyother month or so. And I do not drive it "like your fathers oldsmobile". :)

Just an FYI on longevity.

How about this one? :)

I could have sworn I have heard of someone with close to 200k on his C5 already......let me look around and see who it is and get some info.

I've heard of an oil consumption problem with the earlier C5's that I am sure you are all aware of. Just something to keep in mind, however, everything I have read suggests that the consumption level is "normal."

i just read about one going 250K and still running fine on another forum.

Warren, no picking on Mr Mojo besides he drives a C4. LOL
