Hey everyone,

Over the past few years i've gotten pretty familiar with the in's and out's of radiators and thermostats.
Just lately I heard about a trick that some people do: they drill a small hole or 2 in the thermostat to allow coolant to flow even when the thermostat is closed.

Has anyone done that?

My housing is leaking, so i'm about to put a new one in anyway. Just wondering if this was a good idea or a bad idea.

Thanks!

i have been told the same but ,to put 1 hole in back of thermostat but have not tryed it yet .

I've never heard of it before, but I was just wondering what purpose it would serve.;shrug

Lots of foreighn cars have this, It is called a jiggle valve. Usually a little button hangs off the hole. Not just a hole but serves the same purpose. These should be mounted facing upward. The purpose is to help prevent airlock, and makes the system a little easier to bleed. I would not see much advantage to adding it if the manufacturer didnt feel it was necessary it probably dont need it.

The Mr. Gasket #4364 (Robert Shaw) thermostats come with holes in them, they are supposed to "Fail Safe" and let some water flow even if it gets stuck closed. Pete.
