I am going to install the hood insulation on my '79 this weekend and am looking for any tips. I am going to get the insulation from a local parts store and cut to fit.

Thoughts

Is there any difference in insulation between what the parts store offer compared to the catalog houses? I did see the molded one but didn't want to spend $100.

I have the triangular Edelbrock air cleaner that feeds from the top. Should I cut out around that area?

Also, the clips are still installed, but should I use any spray adhesive? Any tips on preventing it from drooping down?

Thanks in advance

Make some balls of tin foil, and tape them to the top of the air cleaner (around the edge, not on the element). Close the hood. Subtract the thickness of the insulation from the height of the the crushed foil balls. If the resulting gap is too low, then cut away the insulation in that area. If you have a decent gap, then feel free to insulate it.

Personally, I'd probably just cut it away - more flow is better for the air cleaner.

I replaced mine last Fall. You can go three ways on this. Parts Store cut to fit, Corvette Repo fitted, but not molded or GM OEM replacement still available.

I went with the third option from GM. Paid way too much for this part. Parts man said he was giving me a "good" deal on price at $93.

Go to www.gmpartsdirect and put in the part number # and the price should be around $50-$55. Sorry I can't find the part number, I looked.

As far as installation the holding disks just pop off, but be careful not to break the prongs protruding from the underside of the hood. No adhesive is needed or ever used on a '79.

Thanks for the info.

With the adage in mind "the only dum question is the one not asked", which way is up?

One side of the insulation has a shiny foil side and the other side has the insulation material. Which side goes up against the hood?

:confused

I have an early '78 and the insulation is only half way down the hood, someone said that is correct, later they went to the bottom of the hood. Is this correct?

The not-shiny side goes against the hood, I believe. Generally, the shiny side is used to reflect the heat away from whatever is being insulated. In this case, that would be the hood.

So, contrary to the advice we often hear around here, in this case you want to keep the shiny side down.

Thanks Joe

MVFTW - Not sure how much the orginal insulation covered but the critical area on my vette (found the hard way through blisters on the hood) is right above where the air conditioning compressor would be.
