Can one of you C4 gurus ;worship out there please tell me why I have a right hand side ?84-85E? elbow type hood support on my 86L? Corvettes of North Texas seemed bewildered, but said that all the mountings looked original. Car never wrecked according to CarFax and can find nothing that denotes any damage. Was this one of those "we have some of these left over, so let's use them up" type things? Inquiring minds want to know! :crazy

Thanx,
Gordon :pat

That's because they were standard on 86's, I have never seen an 86 without the scissor type hood support.

Mine had the upgrade when I bought it, much better.

I would guess that the chassis was built Early 86 and the drivetrain that was put in was Late. If you check you vin number, I would think it would fall somewhere in the transition period.

Like I said its just a guess.

Thanks Mart........All the pictures I've seen of 86's with the clam open always seem to show what must be the upgrade, and it's bugged me for quite some time but kept forgetting to ask.

Hrtbeat1....VIN shows the car to be a late production model, but good thought.

Thanks for the relief

I'm not sure when they changed. I thought it was 88, but I recently popped the hood on one with the shock and it was Sooo SWEET! I quickly searched one out, and was going to install it last friday night, but the lower mounting bracket was missing. It's in the mail now and should be along in a couple days.

You can generally pick em up for about $75, and I'd say less than an hour on the total install. The hood mount side is built into the hood. Two bolts. Check this thread for pics. http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48552

Thanks, Moonunit............Pretty well convinced to upgrade, although that's about the only exercise I get anymore.

I've had one sitting in the garage for a couple months that I was going to install but couldn't figure out where the lower mount attached. I finally saw Sothpaw's and should be able to do it - mine's the later C4 rather than the mid-C4 style.

Looks they should both hook up to the same spots. Mine's from a 92, should darn near open by itself :D

I thought the pics Ken posted on you're original thread were VERY helpful :beer

The 87-style like Ken's bolt to an L-shaped bracket that sits just front of and on the same level with the top of the wheel well. The later style bolts down next to the radiator (and has a reinforced metal plate that crosses in FRONT of the wheel well; mine has a smaller one). There's a hard line on my car where the support needs to bolt to; I'm hoping I can slide the bracket down behind that line.

:pat 84-87 are right hand and they changed in 88 and are that way thru 96 now. I believe I am right on this. Never did understand why they put the support on the passenger side.
