I will be replacing the engine in my 81 Vette very soon. The intake manifold I selected is the Performer RPM from Edelbrock, great manifold, pretty tall.

Any way, has anyone put this on their engine? How much taller is it then stock? What air cleaner assembly did you use? Finally, what hood did you use?

I've looked at the Vanacor's catalog and hoods with scoops range from 1 1/2" additional clearence to 2 1/2".

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I have a 1977 with an Edelbrock RPM manifold. I'm using a Holley 650 double pumper. I bought a very small air cleaner for it, so it can clear the hood. (stock hood) I'm sure that with this tiny ari cleaner, my air flow is not-so-good, but it fits under the hood.

Tonight, I will give you a measurement from the TOP OF THE MANIFOLD to the BOTTOM OF THE HOOD. That way, you can measure your carb and air cleaner then calculate the amount.

Vanacor has some cool stuff! I went there a few months back. Nice.

Thanks for doing the measuring, it will definitely help.

I have Vanacor's catalog and I agree, very cool stuff. I just want the 'right' look and enough clearence. I'm not asking for everything, right?:eyerole

Any way, thank you again for your help.

hood clearance

i have a 1970 with original big block. car has the original bigblock hood. the original owner put a edelbrock torker intake on the 454.
at first i wondered why go with that manifold (edelbrock states its rpm range is 2500+) then i started looking at the performer rpm to replace it, no good...even with the high factory scoop, i would have to cut the hood. there is approx 2" height difference between the two manifolds.
does anyone have a web address for vanacor?

www.vanacorvette.com.

BDR81Vette, I humbly apologize, because I totally forgot yesterday to measure the clearance for you. I was working in the garage right next to the vette, and totaly forgot. Sorry. Let me try again tonight.

Vic,

Please do not feel badly. When ever you can get to doing the measurement, that wil be ok.

I looked at the Vanacor catalog again, do you think the turbo hood would fit? It is supposed to have 1 3/4" additional clearence. Combine that with a drop base, HEI offset air cleaner and, hey, I might just make it work.

The other alternative is to change the intake, not a great choice with the combination of components I threw into this engine. However, if you or anyone else has a good suggestion....

The engine has 9.5:1 compression, Iron Eagle 215cc intake runner heads with 2.05/1.60 valves, CompCams Extreme Energy XR270H roller cam, Comp Cams Magnum Rockers (1.52), Cam w/ rockers is .509/.502 lift.

Eveything is supposed to be matched to the 1600-5500 rpm range with peak torqe around 3800-4000 rpms.

That is why the Performer RPM would be best.

Thanks for listening to me ramble, and I truely appreciate the help.

Bruce

No probs Bruce.
The turbo hood would work great. In fact, I want a twin turbo hood for my vette to solve my clearance problems. I have seen an air cleaner designed especially for low clearance hoods (maybe Summit racing?).
I'm glad you can forgive my forgetfullness. There is a renaissance festival coming up in Louisiana in a couple weekends. I am a member of a group that performs combat fighting. So, I have been busy as a madman, hustling to finish building leg armour, and to make sure that both my son and I have everything we need to look good and fight great!

Hey Bruce, I finally remembered for you!

First, the total measurements for my carb + air cleaner is 5.5". I then put a wad of aluminum foil ontop the air cleaner and closed the hood. I measured the somewhat flattened ball of foil and determined it to be 1.5". (So, that is the clearance from the top of the air cleaner to the hood)

The overall measurement from TOP of EDELBROCK RPM MANIFOLD to the BOTTOM of the STOCK HOOD is approximately 7".

Good luck getting everything hooked up!

-Vic

Thank you very much for the numbers! That is without question the most usable measurement I can use to figure out how to arrange things.

Also, is the festival this weekend? Did you finish the amour?

Please post a picture of both you and your son in action. I would like to see how the amour looks.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Bruce

The festival starts on Nov. 2nd. My leg armour is very close to completion (should finish this weekend). I still have some small things to finish up, but they are little 'fun-projects' that can be done in an evening while watching a movie or something.

here's some pics of us in action. They were taken a couple months ago. (I've gotten new arm armour since then.)

...my son

a pic of my son in action. (he's 14). There's lots more pics and movies at the web-site.

We'll have pic updates after each weekend at the Ren-Fest.

WOW! That looks fantastic.

If that is the 'old' armour, I really would like to see the new set.

First, go to the gallery.

We only made movies during these months;
Feb., May., June., and Septmeber.

Click on one of those months. At the top of that gallery's page are the links for the movies.

If the movies don't work on your computer, just right click, and do a 'save as' deal.
