Just got the car back yesterday with the headers installed. Wow, what a difference! I have been running with stock exhaust manifolds, 2.5" true-dual pipes, no cats, and a pair of Flowmaster 3 chamber mufflers for about two years. The headers sure took care of a lot of resonance, especially at higher speeds. I was quite surprised, thought the car would have been a little louder after the install (I haven't had a car with headers in 20 years). Sounds a bit more throaty as well from behind. Wish I would have done this years ago when I put the ZZ motor in, forgot how a good set of headers really make the difference. Probably got another 10 -15 hp as well(?).

Howdy!
I have a '79 with the L-82, 4 spd. What model # Hooker's did you buy (or is there only 1 for vettes)?

How much did you pay for the headers and the exhaust work?

How was the fit? Any mods needed?

Thanks!

Stephen

BRIAN, glad your exhaust system is working so well. i can see the smile in your typing.
BTW, where'd you get the cool avitar? i am jealous.

Stephen... I had the guy that did the install actually order them, I'll find out
Monday what part # he used. No mods were needed, he said it was an very easy install... but he's been doing only vettes for years, I imagine everything is easy for him! The headers are anywhere from @$650 - $700 depending on the vendor.

The Missfit... great idea if you have the right tools, the install has cost almost as much as the headers! But I am an old rich guy, so... oh well.

Robin... I just used the google 'image' search for the word corvette, thousands of potential avatars out there! Boxed your new exhaust manifolds today (my old ones), going to mail them (and Culprits intake manifold) on Monday.

BRIAN, thanks very much. the more measuring i do, the more the headers won't fit the Whitney sidepipes. so i am planning on the stock manifolds. yes. i'll lose some h/p,but i don't think these pipe are real power makers. more show and sound.
i will save my headers, maybe have them coated for future use if i need more giddy-yup.also the swap will be a good excuse to detail the motor & repaint it.
thanks also for the avatar info.

HI fish,im always tryen to save a buck :D anywhere i can.As soon as the weather breaks ill be out in the crushed stone driveway layen on my back doen the header install along with a competion plus shifter.Just did my 85 total exhaust replacement the same way,not to bad for being a 50 year old fart/lol :_rock

I had a guy do the install for me.I put in Dynomax Ceramacoat headers,2.5" duals, and Flow 40's.I had got the headers for my '77,that was hit head-on and destroyed,so I used them on the '79.He said they fit perfectly.I have all the options, and there was no need for different brackets,or anything. The ceramic headers ran around $230 from Summit,if I recall correctly. There is no underhood heat build-up with ceramic.

Hey Stephen...

The guy that bought and installed them said there is only one model for the Vettes (63-82)... I can't give you an exact part number because you can't buy where he gets them from (wholeseller). I'm sure there are 100 places to shop price on the web.

Hope that helps... Brian

Brian -

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still looking (and mostly saving $$)!!

check these at summit wlk86008 dynomax ceramic coated 229.95 also talk to bobchad he recently done a 77 which convinced me to do my 78 with headers and i choose mid americ chambered exhaust to follow the headers.

The Dynomax were a nice easy fit. The only two minor burps are making the spacer for the a/c and getting the bolts torqued down.

That $230 won't be your only cost on these things. You will need a high quality metal manifold to head gasket and good bolts such as Stage 8's locking bolts. This will be around $75 with shipping.

If you can't connect the header to the exhaust pipe, count on another $150 - 200 for a tow to the shop and shop work.

How much restriction could you have when you can look through the chambered section and see out the other end, like looking through a piece of straight pipe?
That's the way my chambered sections look.
