Folks,

From what I've read here, my 72 roadster has a common problem: the relay clicks when the horn button is depressed, but there's no horn blast.

Idiot question: where is the horn relay located and is this part something I can find on a shelf at the local auto parts store?

Hi Gary,
The horn relay for the 72 is mounted on the drivers side inner fender. I had no luck finding one at our local parts shops. I got answers like "we don't stock it", "it's discontinued" etc. It seems to be one of those parts that was made for a very narrow band of vehicles. I thought I was going to have to bite the bullet and pay $50.00 (U.S.) or so and order one from some one like Eklers.
I went through the supplier catalog at one of the parts stores and noticed that they displayed wiring diagrams for each of the relays. I found a relay for a late 70's AMC that had the exact same wiring diagram as the one for the 72 Vette. 6 bucks. It didn't quite look the same but it works perfect. Not the "correct" part but you do what you can.

The '68-74 horn relay (also used for '68-'71 ignition switch warning and theft alarm) was #1115878, which was discontinued many years ago, with no replacement released. Dr. Rebuild shows a listing for it, their #2822108, $27.50, and Corvette Central shows one also.

If the relay clicks, you know the relay coil is working; check the terminal the green horn wire connects to and see if you're getting 12 volts there - if no power when the relay clicks, the contacts are shot in the relay. If you have power there, either the horn is bad or it isn't grounded properly. :beer
