How difficult is it for a moderatly experienced backyard mechanic to install a rebuilt rear diff? I'm looking at zip corvettes diffs, should be fairly easy right? any crazy and special tools necessary?
Jens

I've never done a C3, but the C4s are a piece o' cake. A little common sense and the right tools go a long ways to making any job easier. ;)

thats pretty much the answer i was looking for! thanks ken.
anyone who's done it on a c3 or an 80 in particular?
Jens

I just pulled the differential as part of a complete rear suspension rebuild. My 1980 convertible is actually a 1973 corvette with 1980 body and front suspension. So in my case I'm running with a 1973 rear end/diff, so I can't completely advise on the 1980. Your 1980 uses an integrated crossmember/differential. Really should not be difficult. Just take your time and follow the shop or haynes manual. I only needed a few specialized tools which I picked up for cheap from Harbor Freight. The hardest part is simply managing the weight of the diff when lowering or raising to install. In my case, I had it on floor jacks. When I went to lower the jack, the diff rolled off to one side. Good thing my hands and feet were not under there when she went.

Ive just completed the reinstall of my rear suspension. I had every nut and bolt out and have never tackled this before. its pretty straight forward, for my 75 the Diff. is mounted by the cross bar,the later C-3s had the cast aluminum bar that supportes the rear diff. ( dont know the major mounting points but should not be anymore diffucult?) anyway study the install procedures for the spring, and struts. this is not diffucult to install eighter.
I have a shop in town here that does the alignemt and is very familiar with vettes. after I purchased the rear rebuild kit from ecklers and had the rear cover ceramic coated along with the half shafts and purchased new spicer u-joints,all new bearings and seals along with new (carbon fibor)clutches and stiffer posi springs. and the shop charging me $150.00 for the rebuild I have close to the same amount as going with the rebulit exchange route.(just food for thought) (it did take me anoughter month for time.) But for the new crate motor that goes in soon this is helps me sleep at night knowing that the rear is tight and the suspension has gone in with new HD stuff.
I havent got a clue how to download pics. e-mail me and Ill send you some that way. (I do know that much?. lol).
save the wave.
