Anybody done it? My clutch is gone. I'm about to yank the trans to replace it. It's popping out of first sometimes and I'd like to get that fixed. I'll do it myself if it's not too involved.

Any advice or web links to parts and instructions would be appreciated.

It sounds as if your synchros are bad, but that usually causes popping out of second gear. I've rebuilt M-20 & 21 & 22's, and it's not that difficult - just a lot of parts and they go back together with very close tolerances. The key is replacing the synchros - the gears normally don't go bad unless . . . . well, you know. I would get a book with good pictures. Check Hot Rod on the web (or ChevyPower or other gearhead site) and see if there are illustrations. The site for Corvette Magazine has lots of do-it-yourself pages.

Good luck.

And one other thing -- DON'T forget to turn the flywheel and replace the pilot bushing. Very important . . .

He should get the pilot bearing and a new throwout bearing when he get's the new clutch. That should be in there. For me, the pilot bearing was a pain in the ass to get in. But there are many tricks to get it in. If you have a problem just get it real cold (freezer) and/or heat up the insertion point and it should slide in. If only I knew that from the beginning...:D

Lack of time is my biggest enemy...

I'm pretty much up to speed on clutch R&R, its the transmission I'm worried about. I'd get it done by a shop but I have too, too many horror stories already to travel down that path again.

How long does it take you to rebuild a transmission? I figure I should probably triple that number- having never done it. Any special tools necessary?

Thanks

Muncies are not too bad to do. Call up Paul @ www.5speeds.com buy his video on rebuilding them then decide. With parts & tools in hand I can rebuild one in a few hours at a reasonable pace. Most rebuilds run about $400-500 in labor, parts about the same.
