I have a 94 C4 with a 6 speed. The one to four thing drives me crazy. Is there any way to disable it without goofing up the computer etc. This was definitely not one of GM's better ideas. Also, what is the purpose of this crazy thing? Thanks:eyerole

It has something to do with better gas mileage. That's about all I know. The other thing I do know is that most people disable it (myself included). I believe a '94 will require the Power Programmer to reprogram the computer. It won't mess anything up and it actually works fast and is easy to use.

i'm not sure what's going on with my transmission....

mine will flash the "one to four" light, but it's only a light.

i can put it in 2nd gear all i want. in addition- it only comes on when i'm accelerating really slowly, (13% throttle or less at low RPMs, IIRC).

do you guys think a previous owner modify this on my vette or can you guys always push thru to 2nd gear?

furthermore, all i have to do to turn the light off is push the throttle past 13% and it goes away immediately.

i think my post was unhelpful.

GM had to do the 1 to 4 skip to pass emissions. You can unplug the connection, its on the left side of the tranny. There is a kit you can buy, http://www.madvet.com/shop?store=3&frame=721 it basicly is just a cover so dirt does not get in the connection. SOme place might sell it cheaper. The light will still come on the dash, but it won't make you shift to 4th.
Or, you can have your computer re-programmed to disable it. I think Hypertech Power Programmer won't diasable it.

Buy the CAGS bypass kit and install it. It will eliminate the 1-4 block on the trans but it will not disable the light - after a while, you won't even notice the light.

For the OBDII cars, you'll have to use the bypass kit as simply disconnecting the wires at the transmission will set fault codes.

CAGS does 2 things for GM - it improves the gas mileage during the CAFE tests and it lowers drive by noise - both are important to the gov'ment.

ediconu: IF the light is on and you can still shift to 2nd, then you either have the bypass kit or the wires have been unplugged. You already figured out how to never see the light - gas it more.

who would use 13% or less throttle? every start should be a 1500 rpm launch... that's all i know :)

c5d is right. This is a feature that I first heard of when it engaged on my test drive (new owner here!). I thought that it would drive me nuts, but after a month or so with my car I have found that it rarely gets in the way. It doesn't take much to avoid it for me, even driving sedately in the neighborhood. It's nice to get the revs up and listen to the engine anyway.

Your mileage may vary. Pardon the pun. :eyerole

To sum up what he said, the car does not try to force the switch to fourth, only the light comes on. How can you know if it has already been disabled? I face the exact same problem. Anybody else want to address this? I think mine has been disabled but I don't know what the CAGS system is supposed to do in the first place.

If the 1-4 light is on, the computer is still trying to activate the lockout. While this light is on, if you can shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd, your shift lockout has been bypassed on the transmission.

To see if your cars has the bypass installed, get under it and check the wires on the side of the trans. If they are disconnected and plugged, your car has been bypassed.

The lockout of 2nd and 3rd an electrically actuated mechanical system. Again, if you can shift to 2nd or 3rd gear while the light is on, your CAGS has been bypassed. This done by simply disconnecting the wires going to the transmission. You will still get the dash light unless the computer chip has been changed or reprogrammed to eliminate the CAGS.

If CAGS is working, no amount of reasonable force by the driver will allow you to put the can in any gear other than 4th or back to 1st.

However, if the light is on and you shift to 4th, CAGS is satisified and the light goes out, the lockout stops and you can then select any gear you want.

Hope this helps.
