How do I read the Anmeter gague with the following symptoms.

When driving the car, the gague never reads negative. But it fluxuates frequrently and stongly to the positive side. When it goes to the positive side, the RPMs drop, and the interior lights dim.

Now when I first got the car, when it would be in the charging + side. . .it would move to the right and slowly drop back to zero as the battery charged. Now the needle bounces arround. . .and it move quite a bit over the entire positive range. After about 30 minutes of highway driving, the needle will settle out at zero. But the next time I drive it. . .the needle will bounce around again.

Does this mean the battery may be going. . .or is my alternator (which I've rebuilt twice is jumping arround in power output?

Note, my center two head liight bulbs (brights) are no longer working, and the next time I drove the car. . .after about 20 minutes. . .the guage ilumination lights quit on me. Not sure if any of this is related. . .but thought I should mention it.

Regards,
JonR
