This might be a stupid question, but here goes. What is the easiest and safest way to get your C4 up on 4 jack stands? Do you use the factory jack to raise it, or a floor jack? Where do you place the jack stands? I want to do some work under the car and I want to be as safe as possible. Any advice would be appreciated.
When I want to put my Corvette up on four jackstands...
Block the rear wheels and set the hand brake.
If the front is too low to get a floor jack under the spoiler, I raise one side and place a piece of wood under the tire. Then I lower it and place the jack under the front crossmember, where I can lift both front wheels at one time.
Raise the car and place a jackstand at each of the normal jacking points at the front of the side frame rails.
Place the floor jack under the rear end and lift both wheels with the differential housing.
Place jackstands at each of the rear jacking points on the side frame rails.
Be sure to lower the rear first so that it doesn't get away from you, unless you've chocked the front wheels too.
I hope that helps. I gotta remember to take pictures of this process.
How are you getting around the exhaust in the rear? I've been trying to figure out a way to get my rear wheels off the ground without having to do it one side at a time.
I like that home made one. Nice job. I got one from a vendor at Carlisle for $25. I sill have to get my '88 a few more inches of the ground before using a floor jack. I made some ramps from some 2"X10"s to get it up enough to get the floor jack at the right place. I also made a slit in a block of wood that I put on the floor jack to lift the car at the indicated jack points at each side of the car.
I use Richard Newton's method of jacking as outlined in his book, 101 Corvette Projects. Place a 2 x 2 piece of wood (position the 2 X 2 under the rail) on your floor jack and jack one side up in between the two jack points, maybe a little closer to the front jack point. Lift and then place jackstands at the two jackpoints. Go to the other side and repeat. I have one small problem; the 96 LT4 is so stiff I can only get it to rest on three jack stands. One is always loose.
