How does magnesium burn? A pic. is worth a thousand words...

I saw this on another website - pretty wild how the magnesium burned :eek

A friend of a friend lost his house in one of the California fires last week. He had a Porsche GT3RS and a red Ferrari Stradale in the garage.

Here are some pics he sent me. The Porsche is made of steel, so it made it through the fire. The Ferrari is made of aluminum and magnesium. Once the magnesium caught fire the temps got so hot that the Ferrari just completely incinerated. It was parked just to the left of the Porsche and all that remains is the steel muffler and exhaust tips - look closely. That thing that looks like a mailbox is the muffler.

My heart goes out to all those affected by the fires. They're going to become very well acquainted with their insurance policies like never before.

The photos bring one question to mind... why on earth would he have left the Ferrari behind?

Maybe he didn't have time to properly evacuate and save as much as possible. Or maybe he had to drive a more practical vehicle to carry family too.

Whatever the reason, hope they're safe and recovering.

The autoignition temperature of magnesium is approximately 744 K (473 °C, 883 °F).

must have been a very bright light fire

I remember burning small pieces of Magnesium in science class, It gives a light indication comparable with looking into direct sunlight.


we also made our owns fireworks with magnesium and bits of gun powder :ugh

IM JUST AMAZED that anyone would leave those cars and not drive them away from the danger...admittedly I have zero idea as to what happened but if I had a driveable car, ID sure drive it out of the area ,if given the chance rather than allow it to turn to cinders in my house as it burned , you can,t move the house but the cars seem to be a moveable & save-able asset
