How much does it weigh?

I’m getting ready to pull the motor. I plan to pull the motor and transmission (4 speed) out in one shot. Does anyone know how much the motor and transmission weigh? Just want to make sure the engine hoist I rent will be within limits at full extension.

I think a pretty good guess is in the 550lbs range.

Cant answer your question on the weight,

But what do you have planned,It looks like somebody had allready done a nice job on your engine bay and motor detailing it

Its funny but I always wonder if the southern folks use the winter to tear there cars apart or if its just a cold weather climate thing going on,

Do you belong to a local car club? the reason I ask is normally some one always has an engine crane they are willing to lend out (any thing to get it out of there garage for a couple of weeks) Local to us we have these chain store auto parts stores and every time I am in there they always seam to have an in-exspencive Engine crane, Engine stand on sale. the engine crane I would rent or borrow, but the engine stand I would purchase

Best of luck with your project

funny you said that Larry.
A few weeks back when I was working on my engine, I was VERY close to pulling it out and one reason was that an engine hoist was offered to me on a semi-permanet basis because my friend had one down in the basement that he was "tired of tripping over it". He mostly just wanted it out of his way so was willing to lend it to me if i would just get it the h*ll out of his basement!
;LOL

The motor is around 500 lbs, the trans (4 speed) is 95 lbs. I would recommend an engine leveler, it makes the job much easier.

I work on mine anytime the urge sets in and pretty much drive it year round (when I'm not running off the road destroying my tires. :D )

Supposed to be in the low to mid 70's the next 5 days!

Engine weight

Don't forget to extend the legs of the hoist out as far as possible. My engine was gently laid down last week because the legs on the hoist were not fully extended. It could have been a real disaster! Thank goodness it was a soft landing. Adding a tranny/clutch etc. to the engine adds at least 150 lbs. to the total weight of the whole package. I should have known better. Jerry

I've also seen recommendations to pull the engine from the side of the car, instead of the front, since you will have to extend the engine hoist boom quite far out to reach the engine (making it possibly unstable), due to the nose of the car.

I pulled my engine from the front (disconnected the tranny first), then just unhooked the tranny from the mount and slid it under the car and out.

Be careful.

I’m pulling the motor to accomplish a few things. The head needs to be redone. One of the exhaust valve stems mashed over. I’m not sure if I bought it this way but who knows. Also I need to replace the clutch and fix the rear main seal. I figured since I am doing all this work I might as well do it right and break it down to see what I actually have as far as the wear and internals (Cam). Also based on the way the oil pan was sealed to the block (Household silicone) I just want to open her up and take a look.

Did you see my other post on antifreeze? It didn’t look to good did it.

Thanks all for the advice. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Tim

While not essential, an engine leveler makes the job much, much easier and safer because you can set the angle as you lift or lower everything. Your firewall will thank you.

The comment about pulling from the side is a good one. It is much easier from the side. I did see the antifreeze post and no it doesn't look too good, but I wouldn't worry at this point. I would take a good look at the cooling system. The radiator may be bad. My guess is that the coolant had not been changed in a long time and you should take a close look at the radiator.

I've always pulled them as a unit from the side; I put the car up on low jackstands, remove the left front wheel so the leg on the hoist will clear, hook up my tilter to the four extreme corner intake bolts (using longer Grade 8 bolts and hardened washers), and ease it up and out. Have done it this way many times solo. :)

I bought the load leveler (1500 lb) last week along with an engine stand (1000 lb) from www.Grizzly.com. Both items for $60 included shipping. I took IH2LOSE’s advice and stopped by Pepboys tonight for the engine hoist. Great deal, 2 ton hoist for $110. Even better, I got my brother to go half on it and to store it at his house. He has the four car garage, I only have one. My next house must have at least a two car if not more. Anyway this hoist has a 77” boom. I will see if it clears straight on so I can just roll the car back as I pull the motor out. If not it will be tight getting it out from the side in my garage. I’ll keep you posted.

I bought my 2 ton hoist @ Pep Boys as well and mine would not reach from the front. When you check it, make sure the hook can reach over the #5 & #6 cylinders as that will be your rough center line to pickup the eng/trans somewhat level. If it can't, you may run the risk of pulling the hoist into the front end of the car when you start to lift the motor.
