Ladies/Gents,

I've been told that the one of the engine mounts and the tranny mount are broken and need replacing.

I just wondered the following:

(1) Is it hard to replace the tranny mount? Any tips/instructions?

(2) Are the stock mounts (e.g. http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf_id=27500&dept_id=1799 and http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf_id=A9336&dept_id=1873) good enough? These have a vulcanized rubber layer on them for vibrations right? Or are these ones the "solid steel" ones people talk of for higher HP applications?

(3) Is it worth splashing out on poly mounts? I only drive rarely and on weekends so I'm not sure it's worth the extra $100 investment? (http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf_id=39833&dept_id=1746 and http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf_id=35849&dept_id=1766)

As always, thanks for all the help guys.

Motor mounts

Hi and welcome again, Ecklers sells what are called safety mounts but you can get them from the local parts store, they keep the motor from moving to much even if the rubber breakes. The left side is a little difficult to install if you have power steering but still not that bad a replacement.
Go with the rubber transmission mount, it will be just fine for a daily driver. PG.

Definitely get the safety motor mounts.
My original rubber mounts lasted 26 years.
I replaced my motor mounts a few months ago. At least a 2 person job.

Four tips for replacing the motor mounts:
1) create a wooden brace to use to lift the engine. Some people will say you can just put a jack under the oil pan, but that can bend the pan and cause some damage. You'll be better off if you make a wooden U that goes around the oil pan. If you'd like, I can pull mine out and get you the measurements. That will prevent you from damaging anything as you raise the engine
2) don't tighten any of the bolts until you have them all started. Leaving the bolts loose will give you some wiggle room and that will help get everything aligned.
3) You may have to disconnect you headers from the heads in order to give you enough space to get the new mounts in.
4) Be careful that you don't lift the engine too high, or the fan can rise into the fan shroud and bend

You can do it yourself in a day, but it will be a day spent lying on your back under your car as you wish your car was wider.

Good Luck!

Great advice, muchas gracias.

Think I might attempt to tackle it in a few weeks.
I've seen the wooden "saddle"/jig that you talk of, makes a lot of sense as sure that thin metal oil pan would definitely crumple.

Also think I'll stay with the standard metal-with-rubberized-coating mounts all round, rather than expensive polyurethane or hard-riding full-metal mounts.

You don't have any pics of during the installation do you?

vibration from solid mounts will also transfer to your transmission
