How to identify Matching Numbers on a 1976

Could someone please tell me very simply how to check if an engine is a matching numbers engine with a specific car. Where is the number stamped on the engine and to what do you compare it?

I know this is a simple, perhaps stupid question, but I am a beginner. I have Michael Antonick's Corvette Black Book with all the codes, just need a little help finding the number on the block.

I would appreciate any help you can give me.

There is a machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head (may be hard to see as could be under A/C compressor brackets). Two sets of numbers stamped there. One should end with the last 5-6 of the VIN.

The Pastor,

I think Tom has answered your question, although I'd add that for purists the whole 'numbers matching' thing extends beyond just having the original block. All the other major components (heads, tranny ...) are numbered and it's possible to check that they are original for the car.

And by the way, the vehicle VIN is on a plate on the A pillar, viewable through the drivers side of the windshield.

Can I also say, welcome to the forum, and please remember that there are no stupid questions. (If there were I would hold the title for asking the most!)

Pastor,
The only stupid questions are the ones you DON'T ask.
