How to remove tar?

I have what appears to be road tar built up on my 88 behind the wheels. I've tried everything I can think of but it won't come off. It looks like it may have been there for several years prior to buying the car. I've tried regular tar remover and even Avon Skin So Soft to get it off. I've run out of ideas. If anyone has an idea on how to get off really hard, stuck-on tar I would appreciate it.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner.... Pour it onto at 100% cotton towel, then hold it on the area for about 30 seconds, then lightly rub it on the area.

There is often a bit of tiny dirt mixed in with the tar so DO NOT RUB HARD

Thanks Detailing Dude. I tried your suggestion to use the 3M adhesive cleaner. My wife, who is a teacher, had a spray can of the citrus-smelling stuff which she uses to clean poster putty off of the walls. Tried it and it removed all of the baked on tar. Best stuff I've ever used. :cool

Now, where is the best place to get this stuff? The can my wife has was given to her by a friend who's brother use to work at the plant. She, and I, both want more. Any ideas?
