OK so the 93 optis are problematic. I can forsee an opti change in my future and was wonder about the best solution. I found this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7948399313&category=33690
It is a little pricey though but the therory is sound I think

OR should I get a 95-96 opti for replacing my 93 and how would I go about it?
Does it only work on the newer cam?
Can I put an upgrade cover with the vents on mine (While it still works)and attach the vents to where?

Are the Camaro/Fbird LT1 optis compatible the the vette?

Your 93 has 155K miles - how many Opti's have you replaced already?

Have not replaced it I just got the car can't tell if it has been replaced or not. just tryin to get a thread I can refer to when the time comes. Also lookin for info on how to upgrade to vented unit and what other opti's arew compatible and iff a cam change is needed.

I don't the the Opti as a big problem. I read stories about them here but there are a lot more LT1/LT4's out there than there are evil Opti stories. I've owned my 92 since new and I recently converted mine to the 96 style vented Opti but only because I converted the motor to LT4 standards - if you're going to tear the whole motor apart, you might as well upgrade things that are 12 years old.

At any rate, the Opti on my car was still working just fine when it was taken off my car in November of 2003 - it was installed in March of 1992. I had to put the hair dryer to it one time in all those years to dry it out - that was back in 1999 when I lived in Galveston County, Texas (high humidity).

I heard early on not to put a hose to the motor and I never have. If you live in an area with lots of humidity, this may shorten the life of the Opti also.

I see from another thread that you have an oil leak on the front of the motor. This presents a different set of circumstances than just worrying about the Opti. If the Opti and/or water pump shaft seals are the problem, the by all means change out the Opti while it is removed. I would consider that just being smart. If the oil leak is from the front of the intake, that is a different matter and doesn't require the removal of the Opti.

BTW, when my Opti was changed out for the 96 version, the front cover had to change also.

Good luck with your car.

I replaced my '93 with the 'converted' version. You have to use a '93 dist., newer years won't fit the cam, and a '96 cap. You have to modify the dist to attach a special GM part(?) that is an air purge system, about $12, which has 2 vac hoses coming out. 1 hose goes to your air intake, the other is 't-eed' into your breather line. Not as complicated as it seems. There is an article in Corvette Fever, around Feb '01, that explains this. Good Luck:w
