Has anyone out there tried this combination of a Hurst Comp+ shifter w/ stock appearing handle & knob. Corvette Central makes the handle. Any negatives to this setup? Thanks for your replies guys.

I have used this set up on many cars that I have worked on and it is presently on my '65 coupe........I wouldn't have it any other way for an enjoyable driving car.

You will love it!

I installed this setup in my '66 12 years ago. It was the first thing I added to my '59 when I got it last fall. I think it looks and works great. It won't fool the judges though.

I had this setup on a 1966 roadster. It shifts very well, and looks good. The only problem is there is only a spring keeping you from selecting reverse. The factory shifter has a reverse lock-out handle. I haven't done it myself, but people have been known to get a good launch in reverse when the light turns green.

Fuelie - You look familiar! :)

To tell you the truth, I designed & manufactured the one in my Vette around 1987ish. I don't know if I was first, but there weren't any on the market at the time. We sold a few in the New England area, but didn't give it much effort. A year later, there were a ton being sold at Carlisle ... Lookz like I was at the airport when my ship came in.

Ciao,
Jack

my 65 had the Hurst Comp. Plus shifter when I got it, I yearned for the big ol' ball of chrome and liked the general origianl look, so I sourced the repro handle from LIC and swapped out the old one for the new one (actually the story is much longer than that, but that's another topic. The Hurst is a nice tight shifter, but I never had to deal with the original unit so I really have no real world comparo advice. The correct-looking chrome handle is sweet. Note that someone driving your car not aware of the situation might have trouble getting it into reverse, as the reverse lockout piece on the repro handle is for show only, you still need to push the whole handle down to get into reverse.

I did this on my '62. Looks great. But won't fool any judges. You realize that the reverse lockout is fake. Looks real, but won't prevent you from shifting into reverse. This isn't a problem with Hurst shifters. When you buy the boot, buy a stock one for C1s, not one for a Hurst. The shaft usually doesn't come with a knob, so don't forget to order that also when you buy the shaft.

My order got screwed up when I bought mine, so I got 2 shafts. Email me off-line, if you want to buy it. (nospamcritchie1@hotmail.com)
