My '67 came with a Hurst shifter installed on the Muncie 4 speed. I was looking at installing the stock looking shifter handle that is out now on the Hurst linkage but when I got into the system and looked at it the Hurst shifter is not the typical two bolt handle connection. Instead the handle has been welded at the base attachment point in a different configuration :hb . After looking around I've noticed several others on line that have similar welding. It damages the bottom chrome of the handle slightly.

Anyone know why this was done? I suspect it has to do with the C2 config and shifter location matching? :confused

Apparently I am stuck with this config or replacing the whole shifter and there is no other way to keep the hurst benefits while gaining the stock look? Anyone with a similar config? :(

Your bringin' back memories! Years ago I had a '68 Firebird that had what I thought was the original Hurst shifter. I think they were know as the "Mistery shifter". They had no stop bolts and the lever was installed by pushing it into the shifter reciever where it locked into place by some spring shims. To remove it, the procedure was to insert 1 feeler guage down each side of the lever to release the spring shims and then pull the lever out. Use plenty of loosenall 'cause everything is probably pretty gummed up. I eventually eliminated that by drilling two holes in the reciever to use a conventional lever arm.

That spring-shim-retained lever was used on the OEM Factory Hurst shifter on Camaros; it was a Competition-Plus inside, but had no lever stops and used the snap-in lever arrangement so the lever could be installed on the Final Line after body drop with the console already in place.

So these type had the base of the handle welded and not two bolts? I believe this is a pretty old shifter. Any easy way to convert it to support the original corvette-looking handle they make now for the newer two bolt Hursts? (short of replacing the whole thing?) It works great so I'll probably live with it for a while if not.

Anyone else have this config on their C2?

Hurst shifters

I tried to e-mail you privately to offer the parts to convert your shifter to the bolt-on stick type, but you've disabled the e-mail contact feature in your profile. I sure don't want to expose you if you're a spy or in the Witness Protection Program or something like that.

You can call me if you want the parts. I'm in Mobile, AL, and my number is (251) 478-4003. I don't have caller i.d., so there's no risk of me finding out your phone number or real name. The shifter you have sounds like the sixties or early seventies version of the Competition Plus. These all had welded handles. You do not have a Mystery Shifter. Those were made for 3 speeds only.

Welcome Aboard Jerry! Hope you hang around, it's always an asset to have a guy with your knowledge and wry sense of humour at any forum! Patrick :D

Email

Jerry,

I just emailed you, let me know if you got it. I checked my settings and it says everything is enabled. I just left the default settings as far as I can tell. :CRASH

Thanks for the post, maybe you can help me... I'll wait for your email reply at my secret Bat Cave location :dance

I just looked at your profile settings and it looks like you should get emails as long as your address is correct.

Thanks

Yes it seems to have worked the second time around. Thanks for the info!

e-mail problems?

My last e-mail to you (which was sent on the 28th) was returned to me this morning as "undeliverable". Since my previous e-mails got through to you and all others, I can only assume that you're having new server problems.

In this e-mail I tried to answer your questions about the installation. I re-sent it this morning.

Pardon me for not saying this before but welcome to the CAC Jerry.
