i heard that buying one of these second hand is a bad idea. i just dont remember why. something about the previous owners settings cant be erased. anybody know anything about this?

You'll be getting responses, there are many here that have the progammer.

_ken :w

It saves the VIN from the car its used on originally, so the prior owner must erase his VIN by returning the car's normal settings to it, which are stored in the PP. So if he hasnt turned his program back to stock, you wont be able to use it.

All it really does is change the fan settings, and shift points for automatics. Its performance settings are debatable.

I had been looking at them on ebay but now I guess it isn't worth the risk !

Seems like a lot of money for a fan temp switch ?

What might be a better upgrade for the money on a bone stock beast?

Best thing for a 92-96 is gears, youll feel so much more of your engine's power with them.

3.54/3.73 for automatics depending on how much hwy mileage you put on.

4.10s for 6 speeds.

Next thing for A4s is a higher stall Torque converter, say 2600-2800 stall.

Ya, gears is what I am figureing.
I have the auto and 2.59's which work fine but you allways want more.

I never have understood what the deal is with the torque converter>
What is the purpose of the higher stall speed?

The higher stall speed means that the engine revs up to that rpm before the TC locks and sends all the power thru the driveline. Since the LT1 makes its power at a higher rpm, getting your car into this rpm range on takeoff means youll launch it better (hopefully, if you dont get alot of wheelspin) and harder. Gears do the same thing, they get the engine revved up higher into its powerband improving your launch.

Since launching is so important, your 1/4mi times will drop by a couple tenths at least, and youll be quicker to 60mph.

Gotcha :beer

regalniz,
sorry this got off your topic,
now back to our regularly scheduled program

Doesn't the Hypertech reprogrammer change injector pulse time and ignition timing also?

I've been thinking about buying one to improve shift points and firmness. I'm not totally happy with my '96 LT1 autos shift points.

It sounds like a torque converter or gears (I have stock) would improve shiftpoints, but would cost alot more if I include installation.

Anyone try a B&M shift plus electronic shift improver switch?

Sorry if off topic again, just trying to learn.

Chris N :cool

Yes, on automatics it can firm up your shifts. It does also advance timing, but its doubtful that this will really give you any HP.

To tie these two topics together,

If I go with the gear change in the rear end,
This will screw up the computer functions I would think since the speedo and tach will be off.

Is this correctable with a new gear on the speddo cable or is that for the old days?

Or will this need to be done with the programmer?
If it needs to be reprogrammed and I have a speed shop do the gears will I still have to buy a programmer to recal my setup??

So many questions, so little money

You should consider a custom programmed chip. I would perform all the mods first to get the max out of the chip. Jeff(a CAC member) can do one of these for you. A number of us have his chips and they are less expensive than the hypertech. Good luck with your project.

If you change the gears, your speedo will be off. You must have your PCM reprogrammed for everything to work, and the Hypertech will be able to do that. Its not a must that you buy the hypertech for it, but you will have to find someone with the right software to do it, which might be a problem for you.

You dont need the different speedo gears that i would need, only a computer reprogram. (no chips in 94s, the PCM itself must be hooked to something and reprogrammed)

Cocka to the Programmer, get Some Gears, Best investment for seat of the pants acceleration, next to dropping a 383 in the engine Bay,lol:beer
